A virulent epidemic of relapsing fever, which has caused at least 60,000 deaths, is creeping across Africa from west to east, spread | A RECORD GATHERING AT ing death and desolation over |3,000-mile track.

The disease, which is carried by vermin, started in French West Africa among native troops, and spread into British West Africa, Nigeria, and the Chad area. It appeared in Wadai in 1991.

Exact mortality figurea are un

obtainable, but 50,000 deaths have occurred in Bornu (Nigeria), and the death roll in Kano (Nigeria) is reported to be even greater.

The disease appeared at Darfur (Anglo-Egyptiani Sudan) in Sept. ember last year, and is now ravag ing the Zalingsi, Nyala, and Keb kebia districts, all of which are heavily infected.

Death in these districts is report ed to result in sixty to eighty per cent of affected cases, and the Dis trict Commissioner of Zalingei re- ports 10,000 deaths among a popula tion of 45,000.
