OFF DAY'S RACING.

EXCELLENT SPORT UNDER IDEAL CONDITIONS.

MRS. R. J. PATERSON WINS SUBS. CHAMPIONS.

[BY RAPIER]

#

Saturday was easily the most attractive gathering so far at Happy Valley as most of the ladies had taken to brighten colours in consequence of the sun's welcome appearance. There was an anasually large crowd present and the scene can best be described as Hong Kong's Ascot Day.

1

The Course was in the same condition that it was in during the training and therefore suitable for most of the ponies. As a rule most of the Shanghai Jöckeya leave before the off day but on this occasion they all remained.

The Racing.

There were 11 starters in the first race with Home Call a hot favourite. The Gnome, however, yon fairly easily and paid 895.40. Home Call was second and this was the order of my tip for this race.

There was a field of 10 for the second race and Democrates, as predicted, won as he liked.

In the third race there were 7 starters and my selections of Lady Love as the winner and King of Troy second were justified.

The fourth race produced a field of 19 and proved the best raod 50 far. The Grig and Loch, Tummel had a hard fight for first place and the latter just managed to win by a abort head. Bing Boy was a good third. Loch Tummel for a win and Ring Boy for third place were my selections. The Grig I expected to go in the Subs. Champions. Mr. Reidy rode a fine race on Loch T'ummel despite the fact that he was Clerk of the Course. Mr. R. J. (Mr. Wallace); King of the Plains, suffering from fever.

The fifth race was a handicap and it was the best race of the whole Meeting Attaboy was lucky to win Ay a neck and only half a length separated Brigade Call and Ukelele for second and third places.
