MR. DYNASTY WINS CHAMPIONSHIP.

FINE RACE AND GRUELLING · FINISH.

HONG KONG JOCKEY CLUB ANNUAL MEETING.

[Br RAPIER)

The third day's sport was easily the most enjoyable, so far, as the rding and the weather left vory little to be desired. The fact that it was Ladies' Day no doubt ac- counted to some extent for the enceess of the gathering.

Battle Eve collected another win in the first race after a close Bght with Democrates and paid $14.40.

The second race, with a field of 13 ponies, resulted in rather a 602- prising victory by Bagheera. The fortune backers received a dividend of $87,80.

much better one and Mr. Encarnaco prae- tically lifted Demon Bay home. These last races were handicaps and I was glad to see that the weights allotted were those at which it was possible for local jockeys to ride. On the whole the handicapper is de- serving of praise and he cannot be blamed for King of Clube having won so easily as this poay had not previously bad a win to his credit during the meeting.

The Champion Stakes was a most thrilling race. Mr. Dunbar start- three ponies, but they were by no means favourites, as Bengal car- ried most of the public's money having 1,658 tickets for a win and 4,435 for a place against Chesapeake Bay (the next favourite) 740 and 1,070 respectively. A

ANNUAL "BATTLE OF RAC. KÉTS" BEGINS.

PROSPECTS FOR A GOOD SEASON.

Weather and ground conditions permitting a start will be made to day in the Hongkong Cricket Club. Tennis Tournament, which includes the Open Singles and Open Doubles Championships of the Oolony. Great interest always centres in these two events and from now onwards for about two months, the cricket ground will be the venue of local aspirants for these honours. We hope during that time to pre sent in those columns accounts of many close and hard-fought strug- gles, and there is no reason why the present contestants should not maintain the high standard of play associated with there events.

The championships require more of a player than the mere posses sion of fine strokes and a nice` racket well strang. Very often tap- tics and prychology turn the scale against the better player. Stamina counts for a good deal, and of late the number of

cramps. have been on the increase."

Above all is the "wild to win,” as philosophers call the old quali ties of grit and determination.
