ANNUAL DINNER IN ST.

The Past and Present Commer rial Students Association of Hong Kong University held their second annual dinner in St. John's Hall on Saturday evening. It was a very successful and enjoyable even- at its registered ofice, No. 10, Desing some fifty members and their

The sighth ordinary yearly meet. ing of the Bank of East Asia, Ltd., was held at 3.30 p.m. on Saturday,

The toasts of "The King" and The Republic of China?! were proposed by the President, the Hon. Dr. Koterall, C.M.G.

You, my fellow members of the Ar sociation, are now invited to do honour to

Chairman's Speech.

I now approach the toast which is special to the occasion that has brought together a meeting sc distinguished. You have paid the

royalty. I have your endorsement, to express our gladness to see our guests here to-night.

The CHAIRMAN said: The result of the year's working as you will notice is less than that of the previous year. "The reasons

The Association, as its name for this are twofold: The first is that for the greater part of the year designates, is composed of past and before the restoration of free" com-

present students of the commercial munication with Canton we had to department from which the mem- contend with rather abnormal coubers are drawn. This being only ditions in the Colony and the second of recent origin, the actual pum- is the unsettled situation in the in-ber of paaf students is still small, terior rendering the revival of trade while the undergraduate members a very slow process. The corse- have also decreased in numbers. quence is that we have to keep in Two reasons may be ascribed for this: (1) the general depression of hand a very large cash balance in business does not afford encourage case of unforeseen contingencies.ment for students to enroll in the In this connection, I refer you to commercial department; (2) the statement. of accounts. You will high standard aimed at by the de partment seems to have kept away notice therein the amount of total prospective studente. deposita has returned to what I would call that of normal tires- being an increase of over a million dollars in carparison with that of 1825. But under the item of loans and advances, there is a decrease of about one million dollars. You will see therefore that we have not been able to make advantageous employ ment of the increased funds entrust- ed with us by our depositors. How- ever, I hope with the return to normal conditions our Bank will doubtedly obtain its share in the general trade of the Colony.

As usual we have written off for depreciation the sum of $31,000 odd from the Bank Building account. The increase in this account of $100,000 over the 1925 figures repre-

sents money expended on our new

premises under construction in Shanghai. I may mention here in passing that the building is prae tically finished, and the interior decorations will be completed in a few months, just a little before the lease of our present office in Shanghai will expire.

In view of the conditions prevail ing in the Colony in September last, the Directors did not declare an interim dividend. The dividead we now propose to pay is & per cent. on the paid-up capital, and the amount carried forward to

this

year's account is about $100,000 more than the previous year.

With these few remarks, I beg to propose the adoption of the report and accounts, and that the amount standing at the credit of Profit and Loss Account be dealt with an fol
