TIMIDITY OF CANTON MERCHANTS.

MILITARY OPPOSED TO EXTREMISTS.

[FROM OUR CHINESE CORRESPONDENT.]

Canton bas been put under "strict military vigilance" since February 13th. This special mea- sure has been taken to guard against possible armed resistance to the Police and Military orders that there shall te, no further un- lawful occupation of private pro perty by persons claiming to be strikers or union pickets.

Certain militarists are doing what they can to support the Canton Chinese merchants in their fight against further labour tyranny, but the lack of unity among the mar chants themselves is causing a cor- tain amount of embarrassment. The general opinion appears to be that if the merchants cannot do any thing practical to help themselves, the efforts of the military and police will be futile. Strikers are being custed from their rent free lodgings and during the past few days the "blockade "of a number of busi- ness premises by the workers has

It is probable that more children than ever before have come from Canton this year to attend the Chinese schools in the Colony. Most Chinese schools commence their school year as from the middle of the first moun.

Previously a number of parenta in Hong Kong have sent their older children to Canton for their educa- tion, but since the advent of the Soviet Commission and the use of Canton schools as a fruitful field of Bolshevik propaganda, this practica has diminished.

Many schools which have opened during the past few day's have had far more applicants than they could possibly accommodate.
