THE SQUATTERS AT KOWLOON TONG.

THE SAFEGUARDING OF PUBLIC HEALTH.

REVOKE OF PERMITS ASKED FOR.

MR. BRAGA ON DANGER OF CESS POOLS.

The Sanitary Board engaged in à lengthy discussion at their meeting yesterday afternoon on the question of whether the Chinese aquatters at Kowloon Tong, who have been granted permita to cultivate the land, abould be tựped off this particular site in view of the danger of their method of cultivation to the health of residents who live near

The question first arose two weeks ago when Mr. J. M. Braga. asked certain questions on the matter. Following the reply to these questions on that occasion Mr. Braga yesterday brought forward a motion to the effect that the permits granted to these.. squatters should be revoked as soon as possible.

In an able speech, Mr. Brags urged that it was not in the interest of health that there should be cesspools in much class proximity to dwellings, and in which human faeces are allowed to decompose for use as manure, Eo mentioned the danger of an epidemic to the Kowloon Hospital and the Diocesan Boys' School, and as the authorities might take over the School as a military hospital, it was surely most important that the health of troops should be preserved...

Mr. Wong Kwong Tin appealed on behalf of the squatters and said much hardship would be inflicted if they were removed from their means of livelihood. Other speakers contended that there would be to hardship if other sites were provided:

The motion was eventually put, to the meeting but was lost by one vote. Those present were Mr. N. L. Smith (President), Dr. S. W. Teo, Mr. Wong Kwong Tin, Dr. S. C. Ho, Mr. J. M. Braga, Lieut. Col. S. Boylan Smith, Mr. I T. Creasy (Director of Public Works), Dr. J. C. McGown, D. G. W. Pope (Medical Officer of'. Healthy and Mr. D. Davies (Secretary).

At the previous meeting of the Board it was held that while dry cultivation was preferable, there was no necessity for the removal of the squatters unless a nuisance arose which could not be normally abated

Mr. J. M. Braga brought forward the following motion :---
