BUSINESS STILL AT A STANDSTILL.
The state of affairs at Hankow British Concession appeara to remain-practically the same since the mob efected a crisis. The Chinese are still in authority and business is at a stand- still. The Kuomintang Special Commission, with Mr. Eugene Oken as Chairman, has taken ovar control with the avowed Intention of protecting the lives and property of foreigners.
It would appear that the Chinese have cooled, of a bit, and that the leaders are taking a more reasonable view of the situation.
2
Chinese troops have been withdrawn and only “pickets "*-* are on guard, presumably in addition to the Police.
Mr. Chen has, in answer to a request from the Liberal London"Daily News," sent a cablegram "explanatory " of the situation, in the course of which" it will be noted that ha makes a signifcant referance to the British Concession at Kankow having become a ́piece of "Unredeemed China,” - The "explanation?” has not a little of the characteristic flavour o similar arrogant Chinese statements, and, happily, is act being misunderstood in England,
"A Tokyo journal sagety observes that " John Bull wor’t „be bullied,” and warns the Chinèse not to delude themselves that the capture of the Hankow Concession masas Britain's subjection.
