ZOO WINDFALLS. SNOWY OWLS THAT LANDED IN SHIPS IN MID-ATLANTIC,

·Heavy

in the North weather Atlantic has had a sequel in the London Zoo. Five snowy owls, bat- tered in November gales, took re- fuge under the British flag aboard Varis is, and have found their ways to Regent's Park. Two of the birds were caught in one ressol. In addition also a symptom of bad weather at sea-a puffin was recently caught at Hampstead, N., and is recovering its strength at the Zoo,

There are at least two birds which are reasonably suspected of being able to manage Transatlantic. flights the peregrine falcon and the snowy owl. Both species are found in the Old and the New Worlds. With Greenland as a step- ping-stone, there seems to be no reason why the passage (less than 2,000 miles) should not be made in a couple of jumps. Both species have been met by ships in mid- Atlantic, but only occasionally are the birds so dead-beat as to alight on board and sußer capture.

The owl is more of a surprise in mid-Atlantic than the peregrine falcon, since he is not so obviously built for speed.

Both are meat-eaters, and it is notorious that in wild nature at least the carnivorous birds can go longer without food and undertake flights which the fruit and seed eaters cannot face.

Look out for the special show on the 50th anniversary of Mr. Isako's connection, with Circus Life.
