TWO DOCTORS ON TRIAL FOR MURDER.

CONFLICT. OF EXPERT EVIDENCE.

POLICE INSPECTOR'S QUEER EVIDENCE.

The trial was hold before Mr. Justice Branson, at Manchester recently, of Dr. Arthur Stuart Holden, 41, of Preston, and Dr. Frederick Langton Webster, 30, of Bamber Bridge, near Preston, who were charged with the manslaughter of Nora Elizabeth Marinion, 24, daughter of a quarry owner, of Penmaenmawr, North Wales.

The case for the prosecution was that Miss Marmion died from shock during an illegal operation performed by one or both of the doctors at Dr. Webster'a house on October 7th..

The court yas crowded, the upper gal lery being occupied exclusively by women. There were two women on the jury and. a number of well-dressed women were in the body of the court, and at times dur- ing the day two women were in seats on the Bench fanking the judge's chair.

Mr. T. Eastham, C., for the pro- secution, said that after Miss Marmion's death both doctors went to the police station at two d'clock in the morning.

Dr. Webster said to the inspector: This is Dr. Holden. He has had an operation on a woman at my house tonight She has died under the anesthetic

WOMEN JURORS. LONDON SESSIONS CHAIRMAN'S PRAISE. -

The controversy in England as to whether women are too emotional and Dr. Holden said: "I have let Dr. unsuited to make satisfactory jurors has Webster in. She was my patient." Dr. elicited many conflicting views. The dis Webster said: Yes, she was his can." cussion arose after a recent murder trial Later Dr. Webster said: “I am innocent during which a woman jurar collapsed of this charge. They came to my house and became hysterical. The trial resulted to play bridge."

Police Inspector's' “Mistake." The inspector, cross-examined, asked by Mr. J. E. Singleton, K.C. (lor Dr. Helden): Did Dr. Holden say she had come round from the anaesthetic, but went into a fit and died No..

Did he say, I cannot understand why she died 1"-No

Did he say,

This has been a great

shock to me, for she was more a personal friend than a patient!"-No.

Lord Walsingham (formerly, as Mr. J. A. de Grey, a London metropolitan magis trate, and a Recorder) declared that in his opinion women are apt to be biased and prejudiced against men charged with a, particular type of offence.

Sir Robert Wallace, chairman of the County of London Sessions, however, held

different opinion. He said:

I have found women excellent as jurors, and have to complaints against them. We do not get capital offences at the crime I have found that women on a jury Sessions, but in ordinary matters of

are most intelligent. They are quite as level-headed as men, and, in my experi- ence, the addition of women to jaries has made no real change-unless it has made them more intelligent. There seems to no sex question about the affair at Women, and men too, when serving a jury may be influenced by sympathy.

I assume you took it there had been, before the doctors coming to you, & criminal offence committed by thembe
