At first they were for defending the authorship as genuine. But the name of the author, it appeared, had been given in confidence to one director of the firm only. The other directors were in the dark. The book had been submitted to them by a literary agent, Mr. Hesketh l'earson. Inder pressure, however, and to avoid the tornado they saw coming Mesara John Lane disclosed that the name of the author imparted in strict confidence was Sir Rennell Rodd, British Ambassador in Rome from 1908 to 1918.
