CAPTAIN'S HEROIC WIFE.

SAW HUSBAND SWEPT FROM

DECK.

NURSE INJURED IN GALE.

A woman's heroic efforts to save the life of a dying man and to succour cfacers and seamen during one of the fiercest Atlantic gales for a decade were descrip- ed when the steamer Andreas limped into dock at Birkenhead on November 26th.

The heroine is Mrs. O'Donnell, of Liverpool, wife of the captain of the vessel. Her ordeal took place near Devil's Hole," 700 miles south-west of the Fastnet, and about 100 miles from the spot where the officers of the Aldworth made a superhuman effort to save their ship.

In the light of a bright moon Mrs. O'Donnell saw from the chart house her husband and three seamen swept from the after deck by a tremendous sea, and flung back again by a terrific sea, which was almost as high as the funnel.

How they escaped death was a mystery to the remainder of the crew, who, when the water receded from the deck, found Captain O'Donnell with a useless left leg. Chief Officer J. Boulton, of Liverpool, was wedged behind the window with in- ternal injuries, and three others were more or less seriously injured..

Tr, four seconds one evening last month a man leapt from a motor-car in Pall Mall, "S. W., smashed the window of the jewellery shop of Messrs. R. H. Halford' and Sons with a brick, stole gems worth about £1,000, and was driven away.

When an assistant in the shop rushed into the street on hearing the smashing of glass, he saw the door of the car being closed as it drove away. He ran after as it proceeded eastwards up Pall Mall and shouted "Stop thief!"

As the car drew near Waterloo-place the assistant was delighted to see that the traffic was being held up at this point. He and the passers-by who had joined in the chase redoubled efforts.

"It could not have taken me four seconds to reach the door, but when I got there there was no sign of the car.” “

That modern life is too soft" is the contention of Sir George Newman, chief medical officer of the Board of Education, in his annual report.

In his way he was a genius. He held a very high position in the great firm of Siemens-Schukurt for some years before the war, and nobody achieved a high posi tion in that firm without conspicuous technical abilities. He had also a high spirit of patriotic fervour. Undoubtedly he was the victim of overwork; and almost to the very hour of his death he was still working in the interests of his
