EXPOSURE OF "THE WHISPERING GALLERY."

SIR RENNELL RODD'S ALLEGED AUTHORSHIP DISPROVED.

A big stir has been made in London by the publication of a book entitled "The Whispering Gallery-Leaves from 1 Diplomat's Diary."

RETIREMENT OF MR. R. J. GLENDINNING,

CHIEF TRAFFIC INSPECTOR OF

SHANGHAI-NANKING

RAILWAY.

After 21 years service with the Shang-. hai-Nanking Railway, Mr. R. J. Glendin ning, the Chief Traffic Inspector, is retiring at the end of the year, and will leave for Australia early in January."

During his long service he has seen many changes and has had experience of railway operating under conditions not usually associated with his work. In his official capacity, says the N.-C. "Daily Yes, he has necessarily and continuous- ly been associated with the railway staff: throughout the line and the affectionate regard in which he is hold by them was fully demonstrated at a dinner given in his honour at the Great Eastern Hotel by the train guards. At this function there were many expressions of personal Appreciation and sincere regret that the happy relationship covering so years would be severed.

A preliminary puff" article in a famous London evening paper stated:---

It is not only that the book is anony. mous and that the identity of the author, is being kept a close secret; though he himself in his preface tantalises the reader by saying that among the diplomats of Europe my name is a house bold word," and later by dropping what may be clues to his name. But his material is such that one is not surprised be thinks it advisable not to write under his own name.

Few the so-called books of revela At this dinner, Mr. Glendinning was tions of recent years can touch in frank-presented by the guards with a silver ness this book, based on the diaries of shield, inscribed in Chinese characters one whose work in the last thirty years expressing the sentiment that remem- has put me into closest touch with most brance would last wherever the holder of the prominent men in Europe." might be.

There are here some of the frankest por- traits of Kitchener "ever penned; and these by one who evidently was not hampered by any spirit of hero worship

Altogether, this book, written with sach undiplomatie candour, is likely to make & sensation; and I shall be curious to see how soon the author is spotted.

When the book appeared it proved even more scandalous than was expected and the Daily Mail, which bas several times done most useful work in the exposure of frand quickly obtained an emphatic denial of several of the alleged incidents by the persons supposed to be concerned.

Our contemporary stated:--

The Whispering Gallery" is by an author who has not the courage to reveal his identity.

According to his own statements, he is a famous" diplomat" whose, name "is a household word" among the diplomata of Europe,

Lord Oxford's Opinion. Having read the conversations the Earl of Oxford (who was at the date of the alleged conversation Mr. Asquith), "de- scribed the whole thing as

so far as he himself was concerned.

Lord Oxford added:

It displays a really surprising degree of ignorance on the part of the writer Thus this diplomat of thirty years' standing is not aware that the Emperor William I was, in London in 1810 and 11 for he speaks of the visit of 1007 as "the Gerinan Emperor's last visit to England." He spells Bosphorus "'- Bosphorous," and General Town ahend""Townsend," both is the text and index. He krows so little French that he turns the French phrase "vous verrez" into "vous verrez'

He introduces into an alleged dialogue with Cecil Rhodes (in which he professes to report Rhodes verbatim) a phrase which is a recent Americanism and was not current thirty years ago.

"A conversation given verbatim (in Chapter 10), is alleged to have taken place at Mr. Asquith's house, 10; Down- ing-street, at a dinner in the early part of the year 1916," and the leading talkers, according to the romancer, are Mr. Asquith; Mr. Churchill, Mr. Lloyd George, and Sir Edward Grey.

Mr. Churchill's Statement. Mr. Churchill, after reading the pas sage, commented as follows:

The conversations are puerile in their ignorance. I was at the front during the spring of 1918 and I never dined with Mr. Asquith after I left bis Cabinet in the previous year. So much for the vonversation reported in Pages

151-162.

In this particular conversation there is this alleged passage of arms between Mr. Asquith, as he then was, and Mr. Lloyd George:

The next day, November sard, the Daily Mail stated:-

We are able to-day to, give the name of the forger of that scandalous book of alleged memoirs "The Whispering Gal- lery" and the name of the diplomat which was used to induce Messrs. John Lane to publish that book.

The name of the forger is Hesketh Pearson

The name of the diplomat which he fraudulently used, describing him as the author of the bock, is the Rt. Hon. Sir Rennell Rodd, British Ambassador at Home from 1908 to 1919:

Sir Rennell Kodd, in an interview given yesterday, made it certain that he knew nothing of the book and had-as every-. one who knew him must have felt cer- tain was the case-nothing to do with its concoction.

We stated on Friday that The Whispering Gallery was a faked book, and gave the evidence of five Cabinet Ministers, including two ex-Prime Minia- ters, to prove this. We determined to probe the whole business to the bottom in order to stop the manufacture of such untruthful memoirs with their disgrace- ful slanders upon the dead.

As the result of our exposure, Messra John Lane also carried out additional in- vestigations. When they found that they had been duped they made a straight- forward apology and enabled us to pro- secute our inquiries still further.

It became clear to us on Sunday that the forger-the person responsible for: manufacturing this notorious book-was Hesketh Pearson,

We pursued our investigations active- ly yesterday and have now established beyond any doubt that this man duped Lloyd George was on the point of re Alessrs. John Lane by making them be- torting to Mr. Asquith], when Grey in-lieve that the real author was Sir Rennell tercepted quickly;

Rodd."

"What's the alternative suggestion "Sir Rennell Rodd states taht he has [to Lord Kitchener as War Minister.]

Asquith smiled, sipped his port, and then replied:"

(Continued on next Column),

never seen or heard of Hesketh Pearson of had any dealings with him. Pretend- Ted conferences with him by telephone

never took place."
