THE ISLAND OF FUGA,

A SMALL BUT VALUABLE POSSESSION.

HELD BY SPANISH FAMILY 200 YEARS.

41

The Manila Times gives some interest- ing particulars about Faga Island, whose reported sale to Japan was announced and then denied. The island is 40 miles North-West of Apani and of naval value owing to its nearness to Formosa.

Our contémporary states:- The Isinad of Fuga, has been on the market for the last two years, sa the owner, who is without children and nut in the best of health, wishes to travel to Europe. Offers to Filipino interests were made by the broker for its sale, but were not accepted. That no sale was made until the present time, was due to the fact that the parties attempted to keep the property our of the control of foreign interests, but their efforts failing, the sale to the Japanese capitalists was arranged.

Although the Philippine Government is expected to create something of a dis turbance over the transfer of the Island to capitalists of a foreign Power, it is helpless to prevent the sale. Vicente Masigan, the owner, holds Torrens Title. to the island, based on the fact that the land was handed down to him through the last 200 years, as his ancestors were granted the Island by the Spanish Government.

The frst woman to have the freedom of the City of Peterborough conferred upon ber-Miss Margaret Gibson, prin- cipal of Laurel Court School, in the ninstes precinets-received that honoar recently in the old Guildhall. *

Miss Gibson, who is 90 years of age to-day, taught Edith Cavell

The certificate of freedom was enclosed in an oak casket, the wood being many hundreds of years old, having been taken from the woodwork of Peterborough Cathedral.

In spite of her great age, Miss Gibson replied to the speech of the Mayor (Councillor J. T. Fishery, saying that, though she had sometimes succeeded and sometimes failed in her duty, she would try and make amends in future.

Chivalry,

It may also prove that the incident will be included which Vice-admiral Luce, commander of the Glasgow at the time, described at a dinner given in connec tion with the Alm.

He said that when the Leipsig was sink- ing and be sent off boats to rescue the survivors, he told the Germans that his men proposed to cheer them as a tribute to their fighting qualities. The Admiral added: "That was done, and the Ger mins stood up and cheered us back."

Vice-Admiral Luce also expressed the personal opinion that it was impossible for Von Spee to rescue any British sailors after the battle of Coronel...

NOTES ON THE BEST VINTAGES. Never since the war has there been quite such a large and good stock of wine in London as there is at present, and those who are replenishing their wine cellars for the Christmas season

under the most favourable doing so circumstances.

"The first thing they should do," said is to buy their wines connoisseur, from a wine merchant who has a re putation to maintain and not buy a parcel of wine because it is to be sold cheaply. In any event they cannot de far wrong if they buy 1919 champagne and 1920 claret

There is a quantity of good vintage

pot, and of those which can be obtained reasonably that of 1908 is about the best. No port later, than 1912 should be bought.

She thanked the members of the Cor- poration for their, chivalry in giving the freedom to a woman. Adam, she said, amid laughter, never showed chivalry to Eve. He was always painting at the fruit, and what could she do but sacrifice herself for the Adam whom she (Miss Gibson) detested?

A good year for hocks was 1921, and Sir Henry Wynne, the former Irish 1021 was good for white burgundies and Attorney-General, and a cousin of Miss claret. That year was a good one for Gibson, also replied for Miss Gibson. In practically all white wines, but not for honouring her they had honoured her red; the 1993 burgundy is good for lay native land, to which she looked backing down, but the 1919 is the one for with longing and love.
