The professor declared that if the work of Galileo were subtracted from modern civilisation the whole of that civilisation would collapse like a house of cards.

MR. A. M. SAMUEL'S ADVICE ON

EXTENDING IT. ·

Mr. A. M. Samuel, M.P., Minister for Over-seas Trade, speaking at a dinner of the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce, said that India was Great Britam's best rua tomer. He went on:

It would have been better if we had sent more of our savings to India, where they would have been, and are, safe, rather than entruss them to those countries of Central and South-Eastern Europe, Russia, and certain parts of the Western Hemisphere, where so many milions of our people's savings have been lost by default or repudia-

tion.

We still supply 80 per cent, of the machinery imported into India, and most of the British firms have their own technical agents" in India, but still I "come across reports in which the Indian purchasing authorities complain that they do not get the services from our own expert staffs that they desire. They also complain that we do not maintain an adequate supply in India of stocks and spare parts.

My own view is that we could secure a larger amount of the orders for agri cultural machinery in India if arms would combine and turn out a standard type suitable to Indian conditions. It. would enable us to produce a cheaper article, better within the power of the Indian to buy.

COST OF INDUSTRIAL DISPUTES. 143,500,000 DAYS LOST IN ENGLAND.

Sir John Marriott recently asked the Minister of Labour in the House of Commera what was the number of work- ing days lost through industrial disputes in Great Britain in the years from 1919. to 1926.

Mr. Betterton (Parliamentary" Secre- tary, Ministry of Labour), who replied, gave the following figures:
