He insisted on Medical Research having as its ultimate aim the alleviation of human suffering and death, and he be]: lieved that as we acquired more and more knowledge the allotted span of life might be considerably widened. He himself had nearly reached the allotted span, and he found life so full of interest that le resented the suggestion that man was necessarily done at that age.
In England, within his own life time, the average life time of people had been | extended by many years. And he was not prepared to fix any definite limit to what man might attain-zot merely in length of years, in increased, enjoyment of life, but in increased efficiency.
Sir Ronald's speech was listened to with rapt attention, punctuated with applause.
