The tendency of guesswork among for- eigners here, it must be confessed, is rather pessimistic. Seasoned and level headed observers are freely prophesying that the Cantonese, or the Kuominchun, or both, will be in Peking in the spring nad in almost undisputed possession of the 13 Provinces. Many are so fully con- vinced of this that they are consoling themselves as though it were already fact: They say:
Marshal Sun Chuan, Fang recently seized all the vessels on the Yangtze ser- vice, and declined to return them. H. pleaded that he has still to use them for the transportation of his troops
Business Down Considerably. Our informant could not give an
estimate of the actual losses which had
resulted from the seizure of the vessels by Marshal Sun, but business had dropped considerably, he said.

The Darker Viow.
This is making the best, of a bad job in prospect. There are many who take a much darker view, thinking that before the sobering process sets in, victory will have inflamed the nationalists and in spired them to perpetrate excess that will bring sobriety upon them in a very dif- ferent form. Another high foreign authority thinks that we are on the verge "of such an "accident and that the ex plosion may come at any time, next month, to-morrow or even this evening, The writer has given up guessing and therefore submits these ideas as samples of speculation in the high places, of which the render may make what he likes.
