A BROKER'S TRAMRIDE. S

JAPANESE WHO WAS SLIGHTLY INEBRIATED,

The story of a disturbance on a tram- car, the refusal to pay a fare, and the chase, of the alleged "delinquent by the conductor was related at the Central Magistracy yesterday, when Matsu Yoshi Shigiara, a Japanese broker of No. 192, Praya East, was charged with refusing to pay his fare on a tram on Thursday night.

The tram conductor stated that defen- dant failed to produce a season ticket" which he said he held, and when cash was demanded he searched his pockets and found only one cent in Hong Kong our rency and a few small Japanese coins He then jumped off the car and witness gave chase. Defendant was arrested by

an Indian constable.

ل هشته ای

Defendant denied the offence and said that at the time he was accompanied by Mr. Lo, a Chinese broker, who paid his fare.

Asked why he had not called Mr. Lo

as a witness when the police had told him that it would be necessary, defen dant said he did not remember as he was slightly drunk

The case was adjourned until to-day to enable defendant to call his, witness. Bail of $15 was allowed..

PUBLIC INTEREST IN CHINA AFFAIRS IS GROWING STEADILY IN ENGLAND, A WEEK RARELY PASSES NOW WITHOUT A NUMBER OF QUESTIONS BEING ASKED IN THE HOUSE OF COMMONS REGARDING HAPPENINGS AT HANKOW AND ' CANTON.

The news sent by cable is necessarily scanty. Private letters cannot fill the gaps. The people at Home, particularly those having business associations with the Far East or friends in China, will want to read the detailed reports gathered from all quarters in order that they may follow events intelligently, These reports appear in the HONGKONG WEEKLY PRESS, published to day and every Saturday. This week's issue also contains the full account of St. Andrew's Ball. It will show friends at Home that in spite of wars and rumours of wars, strikes, labour troubles and trade disorders, Hong Kong carries on as usual and that Scotch hospitality... is not on the wane.

The
