-FULL SERVICE MAINTAINED IN KWANGTUNG.

The report is to hand on the Chinese Post Office for the fourteenth year of the Chung-Hua-lin-Kuo (1005). It is a well printed and produced booklet of 4 pages published at Shanghai, at the Supply Department, of the Directorate-General of Postz.

The preliminary survey gives figures eloquent of the present dis- order in China. Couriers were attacked on 168 occasions, over 60 being wounded and 14 killed.

On the other hand the postal services of the country show, despite wars, strikes and minor disorders, a very real progress. Mail matter posted totalled 565,000,000, an increaes of $2,500,000 and the number of places supplied with postal facilities was nearly 4,000, an increase of 1,452. A survey of the work in each province is given and that for Kwang- tang is given below. The general review for the year states-

China, where conditions for some years past have not permitted any noticeable augmentation of modern means of como- munication and transport, is at all times an arduous undertaking: when, as dur- ing the year under review, military operations are conducted on a large scale, involving suspension of railway services and disorganising communications ken erally, the maintenance of even the most essential services calls for no small degree of ingenuity on the part of the executive staff and exposes to hardship-aad, at- tires, considerable danger-those mem- bers of the staff who are actually engaged in escorting and transporting the mails. Without desiring to touch upon matters which do not fall within the purview of MACAO|his Report, it should nevertheless be mentioned that the military operations referred to directly affected 14 out of the 24 postal districts, and that the unsettled conditions largely results therefrom necessitated prolonged suspen- sion of the parcel and money order ser vices in various parts of the country thereby causing considerable inconveni- ence to the public and noticeable loss of revenue to the service. During the year, 344 postal establishments were

travelling with mails on 166 occasions, resulting in the wounding of over 60 el these faithful employés; 14 couriers were killed. No less than 247 mail robberies have to be recorded, the Kwangtung District alone reporting 117 cases of loss

Under the circumstances thus brießy cutlined, it is encouraging to note that last year's progress has been maintained during 1925; it is also interesting to apeculate regarding the results which more favourable conditions would have made possible, and which may confidently be expected when peace is restored and trade is no longer restricted by military operations and general unrest.

Not only do native products find their way into general use throughout the Service, Sut competition is stimulated with advan- tages both as so quality and price.
