QUARREL'S ON A ROYAL TRAIN.

IMPORTANT AMERICANS AND QUEEN MARIE, SEATTLE WOMEN IN A HUFF.

Queen Marie's triumphant tour of democratic and Republican American, had its little shadows and recent number of the Daily Mail describes how the jealousies and rivalries that had been In spite of the postponement of the simmering in the entourage of Queen Ewin-Morris fight, I believe that the Marie of Rumanis during her American programme of the Hong Kong Boxing tour culminated in an attack by Mr. Samuel Hill, the aged railway Anancier, Association for the tournament at the on Major Stanley Washburn, whom he City Hall on Saturday night is quite a ordered to leave the royal train.

Mr. Hill, like Miss Lois Fuller, the good one. It was, of course disappoint dancer, was in the train at the Queen's ing to find the arranged fight called off, invitation, but Colonel John H. Carroll bat amends have been made, and Ur.announced: I'm in command of this Brooks, the hard-working manager must the three railways which arranged the train, not only by the appointment of again be congratulated. He puts much Queen's trip but by the approval of her time and labour into the arranging of Majesty as well. No one can be expelled except by my order, and Major Washburn these fights.

will remain.?!

Accounts of the quarrel show that when the royal motor-car entered Portland the Governor of Oregon, Mr. Walter M. Pierce, took a sent in it. Mr. Washburn and Mr. Hill were also in the car.. A special detective whose duty it was to guard the Queen found that he could not do so unless he also had a seat in the motor-car.

*

The Big, Fight. The big fight is now a 15-round catch weight contest between C.P.O. Jim Cart Hidge and Stoker Morris. They have met before, and there is no denying that it was a distinctly poor and uninteresting spectacle." The spectators were bored to

Mr. Washburn, of course, denied the Those who saw the last contest have a accusation. Mr. Hill then exclaimed:

"I must commend the willingness of Jim Cartlidge. He has filled the breach which Ewin has made. He lost to Morris in the previous fight, and yet he is coming up again. Cartlidge is wonderfully game, and there is no doubt that he has done a great deal-for-boxing Hong Kong. He was supposed to have left for Home in November, but his de- parture was postponed. I now under- stand that he is going at the end of the year.

Personally, I believe the Eght will be much better and much more open on this occasion. If the men again clinch tod often it remixina for the referee to be stern. Better that the fight should be stopped early on than bore the specta- tors with a repetition of the last exhibi- tion. But"I am sure this fight will be different

Morris should win. He is much younger than Cartlidge, who is now veteran in the game. Moreover, he carries a hefty punch in either hand. Cartlidge is clever, very fast, and as hard as nails, but he lacks a strong punch

An Interesting Bout.

Certainly the best drawing card on the programme is tea-round heavyweight con. test between P.O., Francis and Stoker Howard It will be Howard's first ap pearance in the ring here, and much is expected of him. I have already given his record in these columns.

He is a middleweight but has gained victories in both the lightheavy and heavyweight classeh. "Francis will be much heavier, and is quite a good boxer, and fighter. But taking Howard's re- cord into account, I don't think that the Petty Officer should worry him over- much. Howard will be fast, nfd vhether the fight be short or go to its full length, I am expecting him to win.

Minor Boats

Minor contests have been well-chosen, Quite a good boat should result between Corp. McManus and L-Sign, Hanzon in the featherweight class. The former should win. In the other featherweight contest Pte. Hume, should defeat Sign.. Crush,

A hard-hitting.contest should be seen in the welters between E.0. Menn and Broker Heynolds. Reynolds should win.

In the middleweights Stoker Morrell will clash with Stoker Evans, and the former should win.

Jealous Women,

CARPENTIER AND ·A· TRICKSTER.

BOXER REMINDS HIM OF JOE BECKETT'S FATE.

One of the confidence men in Paris, who are always on the look-out for victims had the misfortune to try the trick on Georges Carpentier the other day.

According to the Echo de Paris, an elegantly dressed man met the boxer in café and claimed acquaintance on the strength of statement that Georges knew his brother and his uncle. He then explained that he had a big affair to launch in America, and as Georges was going there soon he might help, and he take some part in the could even business.

The Confidence Trick. The two drove off in a taxicab to his hotel, but on the way the man stopped the cab and said that; as his option ex- pired in a few hours, he must pay in some thousands of dollars at once. He would be back in a minute.

He came back in a minute and told Carpentier that he was short of £36, and if Carpentier would lend him that sum he would repay it when they reached the hotel.

P

Carpentier did this, and the man left, apparently to pay it, and came back again. Together they drove to a well known totel, and the man, saying that he would fetch the mones, entered.

Carpentier walked round the corner of the street, where there was another entrance to this hotel, and saw his man hurrying out.

Georges touched him on the shoulder, reminded him of the fate of Beckett, and got back his money.

BEATS MEN RIVALS.

TEN HOURS IN ICY WATER.

Capetown was recently stirred to rare enthusiaan by what is regarded as an unexampled feat of endurance on the part of a young girl swimmer. Peggy Duncan, aged 18, a school girl from John- nesburgh, left Robben Island, eight miles from Capetown, at half-past ten on the morning of November 5th, and reached the beach at the foot of Adderlay-atreot at four minutes past eight that evening, still unexhausted..

The difficulty of the swim arose not from the distance, but from the fact that the water was much colder than the Eng- lish Channel. There were heavy swells and baffing currents to contend with. There was also the danger of sharks, one man-eater having been caught just outside Table Bay that morning. Six men and six women competed, all the men giving up before one o'clock, "one of them describing the sen aslike an ice chest.

The girls, generally, made splendid efforts. Florrie Berndt, a nurse, left the island at six a.m. and gave up after thirteen and a half hours' struggle, when only three-quarters of a mile from the shore. Another competitor who left at the same time as the heroine of the day, although still fresh on leaving the water, at 3.45 pm, reported seeing a shark close to her. Miss Duncan wins the valuable cup given by the Cape Argus.

While excavating in a chicken run the Rev. P. Davies, of Llanboidy, Carmar- thenshire, found a Bronze Agé, uro, 15 inches high, full of charred bones.
