LAWRENCE OF ARABIA AND THE
PALESTINE CAMPAIGN.
PEN PORTRAITS OF ALLENBY AND HIS MEN
-SOME CANDID ANALYSES
Mr. T. E. Lawrence's long-awaited book on the Arab revolt which is being published privately and subscribers for which have been each £30, is amazingly outspoken, says the Evening Standard. The conduct and character of the men who worked with Mr. Lawrence in this great adventure are relentlessly analysed. Arahs, British, French, and Aus tralians are described without fear or pity; and in the same spirit Mr. Lawrence writes about himself.
I
The book covers the period 1916-18, when Mr. Lawrence was attached to the staff of Sir F. Wingate's Hedjaz Expeditionary Force, and later to the staff of Lord Allebby. It gives a day-by-day account of the Arabian campaign and his own part in it.
He are some pen portraits of British, colleagues taken from this chronicle:-
Sir Ronald Storrs, C.M.G., C.B.E.,
Oriental Secretary, Residency, Cairo; | later, Governor of Jerusalem.
The most brilliant Englishman in the Near East, and the deepest.: `
His shadow would have covered out work and British policy in the East like a cloak, had beboen ahle to prepare with the sternness of an athlete for a great fight.
Storrs in full blast was a delight to listen to in the mere matter of Arabic speech and also a lesson to every Englishman alive of how to deal with suspicious or unwilling Orientals. The Late Sir Mark Sykes (formerly, M. P. for Central Hull, and à politician of great promise).
A bundle of prejudices, intuitions, half-sciences. His ideas were, of the outside, and he lacked patience to test his materials before choosing his style of building. His instincts lay
in parody: by choice be was a cari caturist rather than an artist, even in statesmanship. He saw the · odd ́in' everything, and missed the even, ja
His help did us good and harm. For this his last week in Paris tried to atone He had returned from a period of political duty in Syria, after hia awful realisation of the true shape of his dreams, to say gallantly: "I Was wrong here is the truth. His former friends would not see his new. earnestness, and thought him fickle and in error; and.. very soon he died.
"All Brains and Claws.”
Sir Archibald Murray, K.C.B., G.C.MG., D.S.O.; Commander-in-Chief of Egyp tain Army, 1916-18; superseded by Lord Allenby.
Sir Archibald Murray, the "General in Egypt, wanted, naturally enough, no competitors and no competing cam paigns in his sphere. He disliked the civil power, which had so long kept the peace between himself and General Maxwell.
When confronted with what he consi- dered a rival show, he bent his consi- derable powers to crab it
was all brains and claws, nervous, elastic, changeable.
Dr. D. G. Hogarth, C.M.G., Commander R.N.V.R. 1915-19; Director of Arab Bureau, Cairo.
Mentor to all of us was Hogarth, our father, confessor and adviser, who brought us the parallels and lessons of history, and moderation, and courage. To the outsiders he was peacemaker (I was all claws and teeth, and had a devil).
He
would present clearly to us the forces hidden behind the gags and festering akins which we Senew, #4 Arabs.
General Guy Dawnay, C.B., C.M.G.,
D.S.O., M.V.O., on Allenby's Staff.
Dawnay was mainly intellect.. His cald, shy mind gazed upon our efforts with bleak eye, always thinking, thinking.
He was the least pro- fessional of soldiers, a banker who rend Greek history, a strategist nakshamed, and a burning poet with strength over daily things. During the war he had had the grief of planning the attack Suvia (spoiled by incompetent tacti- cians) and the battle for Gars
As each work of his was ruined he withdrew further into the hardnesses of frosted pride, for he was of the stuff of fanatics. Allenby, by not seeing his disantiafaction, broke into him; and Dawany replied by giving for the Jerusalem advance all the talent which he abundantly possessed. A cordial union of two such men made the Turks position hopeless from the outset.

Allenby Puzzled. * Field-Marshal Viscount Allenby, G.C.B.,
Q.C.M.G.; Commander-in-Chief Egyp tion Expeditionary Force, 1917-19.
For Lord Allenby, Mr. Lawrence_ex- hibits an unqualified admiration Here is his first interview with the conqueror of Jerusalem -
Allenby was physically large and con- flent, and morally so great that the comprehension of our littleness came slow to him. He sat in his chair look- ing at me-not straight, as his custora. was, but sideways, puzzled.
He was hardly prepared for anything so odd as myself—a little bure-footed, silk-skirted man offering to hobble the enemy by his preaching it given stores and arms and a fand of two hundred thon and sovereigns to convince and control bis converts. Allenby could
not make out how much WAS genuine performer and how much charlatan...
A. He did not ask many questions nor talk much, but studied the map and listened to my unfolding of Eastera Syria and its inhabitants. At the end he put up his chin and said quite directly, Well, I will do for you what can," and that ended it. I was not sure how far I had caught him; but we learned gradustly that what General Allenby" could do was enough for his very greediest servant.
The Emir Faisal of Krak. Feisal is one of Mr. Lawrence's heroes. He is painted a dignified, picturesque idealist, a man of infinite patience, great courage, deep passion, and fiery energy; a man responding magnificently to any opptal made to his honour.
Feisal was a brave, weak, ignorant spirit, trying to do work for which only a genius, a prophet, or a great criminal was fitted....
In appearance he was tall, graceful, and vigorous, with the most beautiful gait, and a royal dignity of head and shoulders Of course he knew it, and a great part of his public expression was by sign and gesture.
His men
tald me how, after a long spell of fight- ing he had collapsed physically and was carried away from his victory, unconscious, with the foam flecking his Lips.
Lurd Allenby at Damascus—
At the end we see him contrasted with
Feizal, large-eyed, colourless, and worn like a fine dagger; "Allenby, gigantic and red and merry, fit repre sentative of the Power which had thrown a girdle of humour and strong dealing round the world
Kut: More Aeroplanes." On the conduct of the war engine Mr. Lawrence as no less outspoken than about the personalities engaged in it. Here is a characteristic comment:
Had the British headquarters in Mesopotamia obtained from the War Office eight more seroplanes to increase the daily carriage of food to the garri son of Kat, Townshend's resistance- His defence was Turkishly impregnable; might have been indefinitely prolonged. and only blunders within and without forced surrender upon him

The Seven Pillars of Wisdom," as Mr. Lawrence calls the book, is worthy third volume to "Arabia Deserta” which exerted so great an influence on the author's life. It is enriched by 150 illustrations by Eric Kennington, Wil liam Roberts, Augustus John, Hughes- Staunton, and other contemporary artists Land designers,
