REAL-LIFE MOWGLI STORY.
TWO BENGALI CHILDREN
BROUGHT UP BY A WOLF.
INDIAN CLERGYMAN'S STRANGE STORY,
The Westminster Gazette of October 2nd presents its readers with the follow ing remarkable story (very wisely the per takes no responsibility as to its truth) which it has received from India. It tells of two native children being rear- ed in a wolves' lair, after the manner of Rudyard Kipling's Mowgli, the woll boy of the Jungle Book The "real life story
is, however, less pleasant than the romance;
When consulted on the subject, anthro- pological experts in the laboratories of Prof. . Elliott Smith, at University College, London, were disinclined to give the story credence, beyond admitting that humans can subsist any form of animal milk.
Dr. G. M. Vevers, Superintendent of the London Zoo, was also sceptical, and gave it as his opinion that the wolves would probably have eaten the children.
The story, however, is vouched for by the Rev. J. A. L Singh, of Midnapur, Bengal, and in part by Bishop H. Paken ham Walsh, of Bishop's College, Calcutta, and is, accordingly, reproduced for its in- trinsic interest.
Bishop Walsh's narrative is as follows: At the end of August, 1926, I visited the Orphanage run by the Rev. J. A. L. Singh and his wife at Midnapur, West Bengal. Mr. Singh used to be a student of, Bishop's College, Calcutta..
Haunted by Demons "When visiting a distant part of his district the villagers told him there was a certain path which they never used because it was haunted by Bhuts (Demons). They had seen these Bhuts, they declared, enter a hole at the foot of u big art-heap.
Mr. Singh naked them to show him the place, and they pointed out the hole. They saw nothing, and at his suggestion sixteen of them started digging.
After some time two wolves darted out of the hole. Then a she wolf came to the entrance and marled, growled, and refused to move, and they were obliged to shoot it.
"
Two Girls with Wolf Cubs. "Digging on, they came to the den, and found there two wolf cubs and two girls, one aged 2, the other about 8.
clothes. Six years after the she-wol! must have found another baby, and having found pleasure in having a cub that remained stall and did not leave the den, adopted it, too.
Put in Enclosure."
Both girls were Bengalis, and it is not likely they were sisters. Mr. Singh said that he would return and take away the children, and the villagers made an not meat, because they would not touch it. enclosure for them, and threw them food,

He took them to his Orphanage in Mid- naput, where his wife did her best to nurse them to life. The younger, how ever, developed dysentery and died. The elder shed a few tears, the only sign of, emction she ever made,

"Sho takes no interest in cther chil dren or in toys or games. When they gave her a doll she bit it. At first the other children were inclined to tease her. but they soon gave it up because she could bite and scratch.
"She has no fears usual, with children and prefers the dark to the light. She was not afraid of fire till she felt it burn her, and since then she has given it a wide berth.
Weak - Mind.
"Her bearing and sight are extra acute, but her touch does not seem to be developed, and her memory is very went.
"The girls were very fierce. They darted away on all-fours, going faster "She was baptised some time ago, and than anyone there could run, and utter is called Kalama, which she says very ing guttural barkings. They took refuge prettily. Mr. Singh says she has develop in a bush, and were eventually caught.ed much more rapidly since. Their finger-nails were worn into a con- cave shape through constantly scratching the ground.
It is not an uncommon thing in that locality for children to be exposed when infants, especially if they are girls and not wanted. It is probable that the mother wolf had found one such baby and taken it home, carrying it by its

PRESS INTERVIEW.
FIVE CASUALTIES IN MACHINE-GUN AFFRAY.
A machine-gun battle in Chicago on October 12th in which two liquor traffic leaders were killed and three wounded was the subject to-day of national dis cussion, says the Daily Mail. The most significant comment on it and on the con- ditions generally in Chicago is that made by Scarface Capone, whose adopted name is Browne.
Capone, a resolute man of 27, is the acknowledged "King" of the beer trade. He received reporters in his hotel and iasted an amazing interview appealing for the immediate conclusion of peace between himself and his rivals.
Capone, whom the police say it is use less to arrest because he is richly pro vided with alibis, began with a solemn expression of his abhorrence of but chery." While speaking he held' con spicuously in his hand photographs of his dearly-beloved seven-years-old son. He professed extreme regret at the death of Hymie Weiss, one of the victims, and said that he would certainly send flowers to his funeral.
"When the two children were alive they slept huddled one on top of the other, like puppies. She never barks now, or utters noisca, except the words the has learnt. She does not laugh or cry,
