JUBILATION IN CANTON.
CELEBRATING THE BIRTHDAY OF SUN YAT SEN.
INSTALLATION OF NEW KWANGTUNG PROVINCIAL,
GOVERNMENT.
?
ELIMINATION. OF SUN CHUAN FANG AS A MILITARY' LEADER ASSUMED.
A message from the Canton Information Bureau, dated November 13th, reads:
One of the biggest popular celebrations ever held in China was the Canton commemoration of Sun Yat Sen's 60th birthday on November 19th. Conservative estimates state that there were over 500,000 participants in the various exercises. All but necessary work was stopped while the City threw itself into an ardent manifestation of love for the late leader, and the Nationalist movement and of determination to bring his dreams of a united free China to realisation,
THE
"The celebration began with a monster lantern procession on the evening of the 11th A conservative count places the number of paraders at over 200,000 comprising members of Labour Uaiens, Etudent Bodies,. Peasants. Officials and Merchant Bodies. The traffic was blocked in all streets for over four hours while the singing and shouting paraders marched throughout the entire City.
The formal celebration of the birthday took place on the East Parade Ground at noon of the 19th with speakers addressing crowds totalling, 500.000 from five platforms The speaker's main platform included Ku Meng Y, Sun Fo, Labour leaders and others. Simultaneously hundreds of speakers on specially erected platforms throughout the City addressed the street crowds while the processions were constantly moving about the City. Madame Sun Yat Sen spoke before an indoor meeting of the Chung- shan Laiversity on the character of her late husband,
The new Kwangtung Provincial Government was installed in office on November 12th Impressive ceremonies attended the oath taking by the new oficials.
There was a tremendous popular feeling of clation over the military success of the National Aims in Kiangsi daring the past week. It is assumed here that Sun Chuan Fang has been almost completely eliminated as a factor against the National domination of all China North to the Yangtaze. The enormous number of prisoners taken (esti- mated at over 30,000) wil, it is assumel, make Sun. Chuan Fang powerless to continue the campaign."
As far as the trade relations between Hongkong and Canton are concerned there are reports that the Cargo Coolies guilds have decided not to continue the discrimination against vessels flying the British flag, but it is too early yet to state whether these reports are well founded. The Lungahan came down on Saturday with vegetables and a couple of dozen passengers. The Taishan hrought" is about. 200 passengers.
The boats of the other Companies on the Hongkong-Canton run were as usual crowded" with passengers, but so far there has been no sign
of any definite move as far as cargo is concerned.
Two new boats will be put in the Canton trade on Tuesday or Wednesday-the Fürt On, which completed her trials on Saturday, and a sister ship which is expected from the hands of the builders shortly.
Now that the Commissioners of the new "model" Government of Kwangtung bave been formally installed in office it surely only needs the cessation of illegal interference with trade in order to bring about a period of prosperity for the South. There will be some solid ground for rejoicing, and reasons for jubilation among the people of Canton, if the Government decided that it would effectively maintain order. It is however, not yet clear whether this is to the future policy.
