EXPERT'S OPINION OF HIS
" PROWESS.
AN EXAMPLE FOR HONGKONG.
History bristles with instances of laws. and conventions swept aside at the whim of Princes and Sultans, Seldon, how- ever, has there been so much controversy as that which now centres on the, Charles-
ton and its Royal exponents. There is a
recent story of a fashionable London
bali-room where a placard announced is capitals, Cersternation reigned, therefore, when the Prince of Wales commenced dancing it energetically. The Management rose to the occasion by hoisting another placard in the Prince's special corner, declaring "Charleston Danced Here."
There will, no doubt, be some equally good stories about Prince George in the near future, when he shows London how the Charleston should be done..
"Charleston Banned Here."
People have hitherto been a trife ashamed to admit practising the dance with the support of the back of a chairs but now the tables are turned. With a little imagination cae can visualize poster decreeing "Only Charleston Here," and prophecy that those who do nct Charleston will be considered com pletely Edwardian. »
Hongkong assuredly had its eyes open ed the last fortnight by the proficient Charlestoning of Prince George. A local dancing instructress waxed enthusiastic over his perfomance asserting that she had never seen it excelled in London or the East. In her opinion, H.R.H. “ did " the Charleston, with grace, agility, and precision, making what can be a ridicu- lous display into a really fascinating
dance.
In view of such praise by a qualified critic what will Hongkong say-Hongkong which appears to have lived up to its reputation of conservatism by turning ap its surburban nëse at what it cannot do, or has not taken the trouble to learn, falling back on the threadbare excuse
that the Charleston is "out," dead and buried, and is too unfashionable to be resurrected. It may perhaps begin to think that it has missed something, and start practising in secret corners, Prince George proved that the Charleston could he danced as quietly and as unostenta- tiously as a syncopated Fox-trot, even D a crowded. Carnival Night at Repulse Bay, giving po cause for complaints of torn stockings.or bruised legs !
ARMISTICE DAY CEREMONY.
WREATH LAID BY ENGLISH AND CHINESE REPRESENTATIVES.
[BY A GUIDER.]
Armistice Day this year had a parti- cular interest for the Girl Guides of the
Colony. As it was the first time they had been represented at the Cenotaph, side by side with the Regular Forces.
Two Guiders from each Company re- ceived orders to be on parade at the
appointed time, and they stood smartly to attention throughout the two minutes silence.
A unique item in the ceremony was the
laying of the Guides Wreath on the Cenotaph by one Chinese and one Eng-
lish Guide (Miss Kotewall and Mrs. Remington), a token of the comradeship existing between the girls of both nations, mainly due to the Guide move-
ment.
Miss Kotewall retained her national dress which was piped with her Company colours, this being the authorised guide uniform for guiders in the newly in- Leaguruted Chinese Company. It makes H delightful combination of the two alien styles.
Girl Guides being present at the cere mony enabled, every woman in the Colony to feel that she was represented on the solemn occasion, when not only gallant men, but patriotic women, should be honoured; worgen, who served faithfully in many varied capacities throughout the War, some even going as far as Edith lavel in making the ultimats
aucrifice.
As the Guide detachment stood at the
Salute while the Last Post rang out Woman's Salute to those who had goos one instinctively felt they were giving before, and at the same time pledging
themselves to
