MASTER OF FALKLAND,
ARRIVAL OF SHANGHAI TEAM. BUSINESS POST IN CHINA GIVEN“
SOME NOTES ON THE PLAYERS.
A
UP TO MARRY.
The Master of Falkland, according to paragraph in the Daily Mail, had to
and his bride. On leaving Eton be en- tered the Eastern Department of the Asiatic Petroleum Company.
The Shanghai Team arrived yester-make a choice between his business career day on the President Pierce early and they were met by Messrs. Hancock, Owen Hughes, J. D. Humphreys, Rameny, Syrie Thomson and others. They attend ed the Ceremony at the Cenotaph and after a short visit to the Hongkong Club, whore, of course, they have been made honorary members, they proceeded to the Cricket Club, and started practice at Once at the three nets which had been got ready for them. They appeared to find the ground a little hard!.
The list of the Shanghai Team has already been published, but I now have collected a few facts about each player which may be of interest. Some may have been printed before, but I will taxe the risk of republishing for the benefit of those who missed them.
E. J. BARNE-Is the wicket-kreper. He was here in 1921, and at first failed to settle down to our hard and often rry wicket. He improved greatly in the match against Malaya and his keeping will be interesting, to watch this year. Goes in last.
D. C. BORN:➡ds a good bat His fielding is fair, but I understand he does not bowl.
Capt. BARRETT:-Captains the side, as he has done for years. At one time he was one of the best bats in England, and one year I think he was third or fourth in the English averages. Though he has uot quite maintained that form he is one of the first bats in the East. He catches most things that come along, and he has been known to get wickets. Whe- ther from shock to the batsman's nerves or not I have never been sure... But he will have to rolt up his sleeves this year I expret!
M. J. DIFECHA pretty bat, excel- lent feld and useful change bowler. I fancy, however, he is a very nervoUS starter and I don't "think be likes fast bowing. At least he never seemed com. fortable with Havelock-Davies,
L GOLDMAN:-A dashing rather than a sound bal, who has a very good eye. He is also a good folder, but does not bowl.
J. A. Isacs :-A tall member of the Shangbai Police Force, which has pro duced several excellent Interport cricket. ers. Isaacs lives up to their standard I am tolu. A fine left-hand bowler, who bowls medium slow and swings u "lot Not much of a bat I understand.
i
D. W. LEACH:-Is fine all-rounder who has already made a thousand runs this season at Shanghai. A ne field. have for months thought the Charleston was familiar of old to me. I Dow realize, after seeing Donald bowling at the nets, just where the Americans got the idea from. Someone must have seen him bowling in Shanghai.
1. MADARA very correct bat, but has few scoring strokes and takes time to make his runs. A good field,
Dr. H. H. MORAISA useful bat Has with some nice scoring strokes. been reared "on the ball game and fields magnificently, He can bovi medium slow breaks and is a useful man to end a stand.
Dr. W. E. O'HARA-A fine left-hander who car tarn them from leg, or come in with his arm. He used to bowl round the wicker but at nets yesterday he was pushing them down over. I h not sure it this is his regular style now. He cad stick in 'uzcommonly tightly though he could hardly be termed a polished bat. Does not drop much, and dislikes living on the Peak.
L. F. STOKES-A promising bat who is improving steadily. Useful field.
W. MANSEL-SMITH:-A good length bowler, medium right hand, with a bit! of an off break. A fair bat.
I am not yet aware which of the above players is the twelfth man, but shall be in a position to say to-morrow. I be lieve B. W.Dutheit, the manager, is going to act as scorer. F. Syme Thom- Son serves in that capacity for Hong kong while an obscure individual known as R. Abbit mixes the-as you were- marks the tens and supervises the score- board in his beat Hok-lo or is is Hakka? Anyway it doesn't sound much like Can- tonese.
"
The Hongkong side are, I believe, not doing anything very strenuous, as thei ground is at the disposal of the visitors. A day and a half's practice on the strange ground is all too little, and it is a matter for regret that the Shanghai men have so short a time. But for the
The firm have a rule that none of their employees shall marry until they have served for four or five years. Is is considered undesirable that men sent to China should have the responsibility of a wife, and the young man without hesitation decided that his career must be sacrificed for love. The Master of Falkland was married to Miss Southey, Lady Newborough's niece, in London last
month

COUGH!
WITH lots of people a nasty
cough begins with great regularity on the approach of every cold-season. The worst of all coughs incurred at early season is that, if neglected, they become chronic and lasting.
At the first sign of any return of the old cough or chest weakness, slip one or two Peps tablets into the mouth.
The powerful medicinal fumes given off by Peps carry a wonderful purifying and sooth- ing influence into vital inner recesses of, chest and lungs.
Delicate membranes weakened by incessant coughing are strengthened and healed by Peps. They ally sore- ness and irritation, exterminate disuase. germs, and cut and looser phlegm.
Peps bring healing and comfort to the weak-chested. They are equalled for celds, coughs, chills, sore throat, bronchitis, asthma, etc. Peps are ideal for children and adulta.

unfortunate accident to the President" OCEAN COMPREHENSIVE POLICY Ilarrison, they would have had as" extra- day.
By the way, I hear that the accident! might have taken a very nasty turn, but the situation was promptly met and all wir well, save for the delay. But rumour has it the ship was badly boled forward. The team, at any rate look very fit, and none the worse for their unpleasant experience.
I have been asked to mention now that the Competition 'Fun by the Daily Press cannot be ɓally decided until after Saturday. As the conditions stated that marks should be allotted on the team that took the field There is a tremen- dous amount of work to be done in going through the very numerous entrics, but it is, boped that it will be possible to announce the result either on Monday or Tuesday,
