PIRACY OF JUNK.
MASTER AND CREW IMPRISONED.
RANSOMED AFTER SIX MONTHS' CAPITIVITY,
After more than six months' captivity, the master and crew of a Hongkong trad- fing junk have Been released by the pirates into whose hands they fell, after payment to them of $130.
In his report to the police, the master states that while anchored at Kongmoon on April 14th last, his junk was attacked by 16 robbers, who came alongside in a launch.
The case of Will Fondel, "coloured gentlemen claiming to be Japanese through his having been born in Tokyo, came up for sentence in the United States Court yesterday afternoon (says the -C. Daily News of October 3rd), on four charges, 1, assault with intent to kill, 2, assault with danger ous weapon, 3, ordinary assault and 4, battery. His Honour Judgy
The raiders were armed with rifles, and Purdy passed judgment on the first and they ordered the master, his wife, and second counts handing, own a sentence
crew of eighteen (twelve men and six of one year and three months imprison- women) into the hold, over which they ment in the U.S. Penitentiary at e-nailed down the hatch cover.
Neil's Island.
Judge Purdy said that there seemed some question regarding the citizenship of the accused, but that there was no evidence against his alleged American citizenship.
"He speaks English fiuently, has lived a number of years in the United States, and unless there is some logical evidence that he was born in Japan, the court will sustain his American citizenship. The American authorities have taken charge of him since he has been in Shanghai on three of four occasions in this court and it is assumed that the American government is responsible for him. Whatever question of mental, sound- ness there many he, the prisoner speaks like a responsible rational being of ap parent intelligence, and the best thing to do seems to send him back to America where he can be taken care of and his plast more thoroughly investigated." Following this sentence was passed.
Fondel as Letter Writer..
A letter received by Judge Purdy after Fondel's conviction on October 19th, signed by the prisoner, caused consider
able amusement when circulated after the court session. This was as follows:-
Mr. Judge: I, Willie Fondell, demanda a new trial under said conditions:-
1-To be tried by a cullad gentaman! 2.--Prosacutor to be silent during trial. 3. To choose witnesses as I see fit. 4-That the jailor who messed things up be barred.
That all charges be dropped to a small lickker charge.
6. That ma chow and cigg, allowance be raised herewith.
