"AMERICAN·· FREIGHTER

RAMMED.

"CROSS KEYS" SERIOUSLY DAMAGED.

MISHAP WHILE AT ANCHOR.

While at anchor in Iloilo barbour last Wednesday night, the American Oriental. Line Freighter, Gross Keys was rammed by the Bs. Consuelo, according to a cable received by the Manila agents from the master of the vessel.

The Cross Keys left Manils recently with 100 tons of coprs meal from that port, while there was also on board a consignment of four from Puget Sound porta. This cargo was removed to be tween decks after it was found that the ship was making water moderately,

A cable received by the local agents, the American Oriental Line, later gave details of the damage, stating that the Consuelo stern struck fair on the end of the bulkhead, between holds two and three.

The bulkhead and frames in the way of the impart were badly 'buckled; the plat ing from the main deck down sustained a dent 34 feet long and one foot deep, and the lower plate was fractured; also there is a hole at the main deck. Three dick plates and the side of the deck-house were buckled and the superstructure, work of the boat and bridge deck was damaged. The cargo damage was slight.

Temporary repairs are being made with the crew. The master of the vessel is confident that he can make the vessel sen- worthy to proceed to Cebu and dis charge all outward cargo. It will then call at Manila.

HANDCRAFT

ancient and modern

The delicate art of the Saxon Silversmith has produced many miracles of design, each of a per fection that could only be attained by handcraft.

Similarly, because State Express Cigarettes are 'made by hand-one at a time' they have achieved the perfection for which they alone are so justly famous.

ONE-DOLLAR NOTES.

NEW ISSUE FOR THE STRAITS SETTLEMENTS.

DESCRIPTION OF THE NEW DESIGN.

About the beginning of next month the Currency Commissioners will issue a $1 note of an entirely new design, says the Straits Times.

The new note is printed on pale pink paper, and is of exactly the same size as the existing 81 note.

ין

The colour scheme of the new note is brick red, and the distinctive features are scenes of a local character, & sea- scape and a native village on the front of the note and a seaside coconut scene on the back.

The new issue is numbered in two places only, the top right hand corner and the bottom left hand corner, and bears the fascimile of the Treasurer's signature along on behalf of the Currency Commissioners.

The signature appears at the centre of the bottom part of the note, and is printed in red.

The first series of the new notes is dated January 1st, 1995.

Notes of the existing design will con- time in circulation side by side with the new type, but will be gradually with- Crawn as opportunity offers.
