THE TREND OF AFFAIRS IN SWATOW.
HOW A CHANGE IS BEING BROUGHT ABOUT.
GOVERNMENT PROVING TOO STRONG FOR EXTREMIST LABOUR LEADERS.
INTERESTING DETAILS OF UNION MEETINGS.
(FROM OUR SWATOW CORRESPONDENT.]
Two letters from our Swatow correspondent, dated October 16th and October 19th, which were received by the last mail, confirm the telegrams. which have already been published in the Daily Press, and give interest- ing details of the methods adopted by the Strike leaders to secure a continuation of the boycott
As is known, three representatives of the Swatow Strike Committee went to Catton in order that they might investigate the position there and make a report to their colleagues. Upon their return a meeting of the Labour Unions was held which lasted from 11 am until 5 p.m. The delegates stated at this meeting that there was absolutely no change in the Canton situation and upon this information resolutions were passed to continue, the boycott.
Obviously the delegates were lying and they practically confessed as "much in a written and presumably more confidential report which they presented to the Strike Committee. When the gist of this report became known over the week-end the various Labour Unions took matters more into their own hands. Separate Union meetings were Keld and, as will be seen from the letters below, a number of employees have already seturned to work. The latest advice is that the domestic servants, most of whose positions have, of course, been filled, are endeavouring, to delay a general resumption until their prospects of employment are considered, but it, is doubtful whether they will be able to stem the tide."
As was pointed out in the Daily Press. yesterday the extremista endeavoured to foment trouble as long as possible. It seems obvious now, however, that the Government have thrown their weight on the, side of order and the extremists have had to give way. It is a good augury and leads us to hope that in Canton the Government will also be able shortly to smooth away the little difficulties which are still hampering trade.
