AN OLD-FASHIONABLE CHINESE MARRIAGE.

CURIOUS CUSTOMS,

NIGHTLY WAILING AS TIME OF CEREMONY APPROACHES

BRIDE MAKES HER HUSBAND A PAIR OF TROUSERS AS. INDICATION MARRIED LIFE HAS BEGUN.

[BY AGNES FUNG.)

"It is about time that we find a husband for our daughter," says the family tyrant to his submissive wife, and then begins the neverweary toif of the go-between. The latter in most cases is a woman and nicknamed as "one who bolds the fan," seeks the family of every eligible young man she can get hold of and expounds on the virtues of the young lady with a fluency that few can rival and accompanied sometimes by the big- gest lies and exaggeration. A card with the year, month, day, and hour of the girl's birth is in the hands of this woman, and so are those of the young men. The latter are looked into by the girl's parents, and when there is one which time of birth harmonizes with that of the girl's according to the book on the subject, the pedigree of the young man will be considered. Very often a diviner is consulted. It is vital that the two eards be in accord as it is believed that the fate of one may influence that of an- other for good or-evil. When there is no question about the births, a long enquiry is made by both families into the wealth, and health, of the other, and then into the character, Constitution, and know- ledge of the party concerned, and when both families are satisfied, negotiations begin, and a day is set for the betrothal, a.lucky day "being chosen

The night before the wedding, the bridegroom also has his hair combed by one who has borpe many children, he is arrayed in a long gown with a short coat over it, a red-fringed cap is placed on his head and an artificial flower of gold is stuck on the cap by the father or a relative, while two red bands cross each other from the shoulders and are tied at opposite sides of the waist. At the same time, he is given a new name. Often priests are present in this ceremony, and they chant their prayers which consist mostly of good wishes. The bridegroom then leaves for, the bride's home shortly before the sedan chair is sent. When the latter reaches with long procession of decorative objects preceding it, and to the accompaniment of music, it is not allowed to enter unless the bridegroom's family promises to give certain things, generally catables which are demanded. | When the sun begins to set, the bridal couple start for the boy's home.
