HONGKONG SHIPPING.

INCREASE IN HONGKONG CARGO.

Although only three fewer arrivals. were shown in yesterday morning's ship ping statement, than during the previous day, there was a big decrease, in the total freight, compared with the figures for the previous twenty-four hours." Returus made were poor, and if it had not been for one big entry by a Dutch steamer they would have been even lower."

It was in view of the return referred to that Hongkong cargo managed to show an increase instead of a decrease as the case would otherwise have been.. The increase amounted to something like 3,000 tons, but freight for porta beyond went down to the extent of over 14,000. ton

TONNAGE AND NATIONALITIES.

The tonnage figures were as under:- Total: 38,781 tons; British vessels: 17,623 tons: Other vessels: 20,838 tons.

At 9 am yesterday there were 53 vessels in the harbour, of which 24 were British. During the previous twenty-}. four hours twelve vessels arrived, viš., seven British, one American,.. one German, two Chinese and one Dutch. The departures during the 'same period came to seventeen, viz., one Japanese for Saigon, one British for Amoy, one Dutch for Swatow, one Chinese for Sha U ́ Cheung, one Japanese and one British for Singapore, one Japanese, one Italian and one Chinese for Shanghai, American for Manila, one British for Moji, one, British for Canton, one apanese for Keelung, one Japanese and one British for Takao, and two Chinese and one French for Kwang Chow Wan.

Of the cargo for Hongkong, five British vessels brought 4,552 tons between them, the best returns being 1,800 tons and 1,347 tons. Of the remaining 8,370 tons in vessels of other nationalities, one vessel returned 7,081 tons. With regard to the freight for ports beyond, this was all car- ried in three vessels, a British steamer had 120 ters, and two vessels under other flags carried 1,200 tons-and-4;3562- tons respectively.
