The 8.5. West Faralon (American) arrived in port yesterday morning from the North, and the master reported (as previously recorded in the Daily Prem) that the ship want ashore at Oshima Island in July last, but had been rẻ- paired in Yokohama.

When the steamer Kuang Tung arrived at Singapore from Amoy on September 22nd, officers of the Preventive Service went on board to search the vessel and discovered 9,200 taels of illicit opium concealed in the coal bunkers. The opium

is valued at about $80,000.

Directors of the Nippon Tusen Kaisha have decided to build two steamers, each of about 3,200 tons, to be placed on the Kobe Shanghai service. The vessels will be of the Chikuba Maru type and will cost about 1.500.000 each. There are now eight steamers alloted to the line, but the company is worried about the increasing competition of the Yamashita Kisen Kaisha and wishes to improve its service, which it has held exclusively for many years. It is expected that the Mitsubishi Shipbuilding and Engineer- ing Works and the Yokohama Dockyard, which is under N.T.K. management, will receive the orders for the now." ships. The company also has announced sale of a tract of land along the Yangtare to Chinese firm for 500,000 and pur- chase of the former site of the Shanghai branch of the Yokohama Specię Bank for Y1,000,000. The N.Y.K. will erect a new building there. It is believed that the business results for the present term will be less favourable, than those for the term which ended in July.
