THE VICISSITUDES OF A TRIP FROM CHANGSHA
TO HONGKONG.

When Mr. Hwang, after spending his summer vacation at Changsha, decided to return to Hongkong to resume his studies, he found that the armies of Chiang Kai Shek were fighting a battle across his route. Changsha, as can be seen by those who possess a map of China, is a, town on the incompleted Hankaw-Canton Railway, about two hundred miles South-west of Wucbang. Mr. Hwang'a ordinary route would be to
the river proceed north by this railway to Wachang, cross "Haykow, and thence proceed by a British river steamship to Shang hai. With Chang Kai Shek's armies deployed across the railway, and a big battle impending for the Hanyang-Hanków-Wuchang conglomera- tion, this route was impossible. Rolling stock was otherwise engaged, and.... was directed to places where civilian could wish to be conducted. steamers which usually ply from Changsha through Tochow to Wuchang were held up, antil mare settled times, at Changsha. An ordinary man Anding himself situated at the beginning of September, would have decided to stay there until the clouds rolled by. But inspired as he was with the intrepid zeal of a true student, Mr. Hwang decided to carry out the journey. He would make his way either through or round the armies arrayed for battle. How he succeeded is a narative of more than sufficient interest to justify the detailed account which he will some day write, as the hero of Waverley is conceived to have written the account of his experiences in the 'Forty-Five. For the present the story may well be told in outline.
Realising that it would be impossible fortaveller to pierce the centre of the battic-line, Mr. Hwang decided to go round the left flank of Chiang Kai'Shek s To do this he decided to use a private motor lauach. In it he would sait down the river from Changihe into the huge lake called Tung-ting, which he! would across diagonally from the south. cast corner to the north-weat, and then! make his way to a town on the Yangtze called Shasi. Shasi is more than two hundred miles above Hankow But
