1013. The increase is in merchandise carried from south to north, which amounted to 17,778,000 tons, compared with 14,466,000 tons in the last pre-war year.
The outward traffic (8,802,000 tons) is being still more than 3,000,000 tons below the 1913 6gure, coal cargoes being down by 513,000 tons, and machinery, etc., by close on 400,000 tons. Compared with 1913, the quantity of mineral oil from the East has increased by 1,260,000 tons, while wheat, soya beans, copra and gun nies have also been carried in consider chly greater quantities.
Europe's Share.
it is of interest to note that the higher figures for 1925 are mainly due to the larger imports of Oriental merchandise by the United States, these being almost double the 1913 figure of 893,000 tons. So far aa Europe is concerned, it appears that it has exported east of Suez 2,934,000. tons less than before the war while it has imported 2,402,000 tona mode.
India has proved a good customer, tak ing 3,055,000 tons of goods, against 3,641,000 tona in 1994, but exports to China and Japan were on a markedly lower scale. There were increases to the Straits Settlements, East Africa and Australia.
