LORD BIRKENHEAD ON MR. COOK.
Lord Birkenhead, Secretary for India, Barnsley, at Wentworth Castle, near Yorkshire, speaking on the coal dispute on August 30th said :---
When the melancholy struggle in the coalfields is concluded it will be on worse terms than the miners could have secured four months ago. If the struggle goes on for another two months the terms will be worse than could be secured to-day.
The only contribution Mr. Cook has made to this controversy is the suggestion that the mines should close down, except those which could pay existing wages with existing hours. When it was pointed out to him that this would mean that 300,000 men would be cut of employment, he re plied, "Let them go on the dole."
Face the Facta.
The coal industry is the only one in Great Britain which does not face the facta. I work at the law. Do you sup- Lose that if people would not employ me I would go to Russia to collect funds to keep met

ing less wages than the British miners.
If I know anything of the hearts of the miners of this country they do not accept with satisfaction the policy in which they have become involved by those Icaders.","
Is there anyone so foolish as to suggest that as a result of the struggle the miners will be better off!
A Voice: Yes,
Lord Birkenhead: They are stealing You your markets all over the world will not get them back for fifteen years. They ato showing a spirit of inter national solidarity on which foolish young men prida themselves by sending into the country as much blackleg coal as we choose to buy.
Led to Disaster.
What is the good of talking about the Government! Let the leaders learn, as every other great industry has learned, to manage their own business without coming whinning to the Government to: manage it for them."
The reason the miners cannot manage their own affairs is that they have blind men leading the movement from one disaster to another." I do not say a disrespectful word of Mr. Smith except that his mind does not move rapidly. Unfortunately he is associated with a partner whose mind moves too rapidly. The combination has been ruinous to a great English industry,
At this moment if these two men would! tell the truth to all who so blindly follow them this strike would end in a day. Are the men ever going back to the pits?
A Voice: No.
Lord Birkenhead: I do not suppose I was talking you ever were in one. about men who work (Cheers)

SISTER'S TOUR. .
396 MILES FOR 75. 4d.
Two sisters arrived in, London on August 30th from Land's End, Cornwall, having travelled all the way-396 miles
They chose this by motor-omnibuses. means of travel as the best way to ex- plore the countryside and to see the places of interest.
Miss Brown, of Castle Terrace, Edin burgh, the younger of the aistors, said that they had no pre-arranged plan, but simply took any motor-omnibus which would take them to a town nearer London. They found no difficulty in getting from one town to another. The journey took nine travelling days. Miss Brown, des cribing the journey, said:
It was a wonderful experience. We travelled in 23 omnibuses, before we reached London, but we were not a bit tired of it. Our journey was quite pleasant all the time. Every mile was interesting as we passed through towns and villages, and we enjoyed studying the ever-changing types of our fellow- "passengers, The conductors were most
courteous and informative.
Our omnibus tickets cost £9 78. d ench, or roughly 1d. per mile. [The ordinary railway fare from London to Penzance, 10 miles from Land's End,' is £1 17. 11d.]·

It is becoming increasingly clear, according to reports from Budapest, that Admiral Horths, the Regent of Hungary, will retire this autumn, and the Arch- duke Joseph will be elected Regent on the fourteen-year-old son of the late Emperor understanding that Archduke Otto, the Karl, will be called to Hungary at an opportune moment as King, writes the A Splendid Combination
Vienna correspondent of a Home paper.
Count Bethlen, the Hungarian Pre- mier, the Hungarian aristocracy, and the most influential of the Hungarian and Austrian banking firms, are reported to have approved of the plan.
