RACING NOTES.

(BY RAPIKR)

Although Happy Valley presents a very desolate appearance the odds are on the Jockey Club in their fight against the elements and the Meeting on October the 9th promises to be a successful one. Mr. E C. Rock, the popular manager of the Jockey Club Stables, has returned to the Colony after a well earned holiday in England. He has brought back with him a very fine collection of saddlers which can be seen at the Jockey Club Stables at Causeway Bay.

NOVICES AND CHAMPIONS AT MURRAY BARRACKS.

THE GENERAL'S APPRECIATION.

[BY CADOFYDD.]

The Novices Boxing Competition, for the Hongkong Challenge Shield had the Battalion open competitions, were con- eluded at the Murray Barracks on Satur day night.

Steward of the Jockey Club in June, He knows a good deal about the practical side of racing and is always willing to help a new Owner with advice regarding training, etc. In this respect he fills a great need as there are many people who are afraid to face the responsibilities of ownership owing to their lack of experi- ence with ponica.

Hongkong Company won. Shield for the fifth time with 100 points. The scores of the other Companies were: Company 44: C, 30; Red Wing, 34;

A Suggestion.

Going into the "coffee room I came across a melancholy reminder of the late Sir Paul Chater in the shape of the let ters C.P.C. on some of the tables and chairs. His photographs appear in mary groups in the coffee room but I should like to see an oil painting of him placed there by the Jockey Club. He was the G.O.. of Racing here and his most price. less legacy consists in the traditions built up by him and passed on to us.

Subscription Griffins.

At the conclusion of the fights, Brevet Colonel F. S. Montague-Bates, C.B., | Q.M.G., D.S.O., 'said that he had to thank the Hongkong Boxing Association for again presenting them with a shield," also the Kowloon Cricket Club for the gift of two silver cups, and Mr. Thorn- hill for presenting a cup which would be fought for later.

Appreciation of Mr. Dyer.

It was hardly necessary, he continued. to introduce Mr. R. M. Dyer. He was not only the president of the Hongkong Boxing Association, but had done a great deal for the regiment. (Applause.) Last year he had entertained half the battalion. at Stonecutters, and this year he was in- sisting on entertaining the whole bat talion there on Sunday week. (Applause.) Moreover, during their stay in the Colony, Mr. Dyer had provided launches for the men whenever asked to. He had con- sented to present the shield to the win.
