Food Shortage in Wachang. Reports sent to the American Church Mission bore indicate the state of ex- treme food shortage which the members of their Mission Hospital staff in' Wuchang are facing at the present time. A letter written on September 17th By a missionary in Hankow says that neither rice, flour nor beans can be purchased by the foreigners in Wachang, regardless of the prices paid. An attempt on Septem ber 16th to send supplies into Wachang nearly caused a riot on the part of the Chinese, it is further said, as strict surveillance is maintained to see that the Chinese feceive in-coming supplies.

Shanghai must know much more af what is happening at Kiukiang than Hankow does because here all communi- cations are rigily censored. We hear to-day, however, that in addition to the great bodies of troops that have passed through, some bound for Wusuch and some for Pingkiang, an imposing array of leaders has assembled in Kiukiang. | It is said, that Sun Chuan Fang is în Kiukiang in person, which is much doubted here, that the Kunanese general Yeh Kni Kein is there and that Chen Tina Yuza, the bane of all unreasonable bandits, has also arrived. A rough estimate of the troops that have passed through Kiukiang is 70,000. This does not profess to be more than a guess but comes from an observer whose guesses in military matters are worth more than most men's careful reckonings.

HOW THE SOUTHERNERS TOOK KANCHOW,
TOTAL LOSS OF BOTH SIDES—SEVEN MEN.
"The following description of the capture of Kanchow in Kiangsi by the Southerners will be read with interest. It throws a clear light upon Chinese military methods and shows that the reports of "great battles " must always be heavily discounted. The General defending the town had already retired to rest when the news was received that the enemy were approaching. He scarcely waited long enough to slip on his uniform. A Captain in the outposts ordered his men to hold the position while he та They waited until he was out of sight and then they followed. Kanchow is a fairly important town Two Southern soldiers were killed in the streets and five men of the Northern force lost their lives. The account of the town's capture is written by the N-C. Daily News corre spondent and is dated September 7th. He writes:
For a few days there were persistent rumours of an Army of Southern troops invading Kanchow but it was more or less discounted by those who were not in the knowledge of military things.dra
Things grew very strenuous on Satur. day, September 4th, and coolies were being impressed for military work, and on Sunday morning carly troops were sent to meet and defeat this invading army, They had only travelled about 30 li when they were met by the advance guard of the enemy, and had a battle. By midday on Sunday wounded hagan to arrive but not very many. By about 4 p.m. the sound of rifle fire was plainly heard out side the East gate, and continued to come bearer until about 8 p.m. when there was quite a lot of firing, in the streets. This continued at intervals until about mid. night, when peace reigned.

Small Cost. Later, we understand that of these who took the city two paid the supreme penalty in the street. Altogether five lives are known to have been lost in the exchange.
If reports are true the General com maading had retired, when the news was brought in to him that he was to get out as soon as possible, and if is said that he had hardly time to dress, but made his way with as little dolay as possible.
