Marshal Wu Pei Fu is a native of Shantung and is 53 years of age. When he was only 21, he obtained the degree of Sit, which is equivalent to that of Bachelor of Arts, in classics. He graduated with honours from the Hai Ping Military Academy, near Tientsin, in 1803, and is one of the very few military lenders in China who is well educated. After a brief service in the army he entered the military college of which Marshal Tuan Chi-jui was direc- tor. Again graduating with honours, ho joined the Third Army Division, of which Marshal (later President) Tano Kun was commander, and soon after wards was promoted to the command of a battalion.
