At Happy Valley the seventh green,

New York, August 9th." A sensation was caused in lawn tennis which was low lying, and apoilt by the storm, has had to be remade. The circles to-day by the publication of P.W.D. have done a considerable amount report that Miss Elizabeth Ryan bad of work towards clearing the Happy followed the example of Mile. Lenglen Valley course and rendering it in a fit and accepted an offer of £20,000 to turn state for play again. There is still a professional. great deal to be done, however, before the course will be available to the junior section. As the Football Club will be requiring their ground at the Valley within another week or zo," the P.W.D. are at present concentrating their atten tion to this ground, and a large number of coolies are engaged in work here.. It is hoped, however, that once the, work is complete there that activity on the Volley Golf Course will be renewed, in view of the great deal still to be accom- plished.

One of the most dreadful rites of these

people, practised until recently, was to climb to the mouth of the crater and her! their children into the molten depths below to appease the wrath of the god dess of the volcano. This has been out wardly stopped, but I have a suspicion that this horrible practice is still con- tinued in secrecy by the Indiana.

A Simple Affair, The marriage ceremony of the Zutuhile Indians is most remarkable and unlike any other I have known among the many native tribes I have lived among and visited. Major John Hay Beith (Ian Hay, the author) gave an after-luncheon address to the teachers attending the City of London Vacation Course at the Holborn Restaurant on August 9th4.

He said that his own early experiences taught him-he, was for some years a master at Fettes School, Edinburgh- that the first thing necessary in schoo! was discipline. Discipline inculcated in the British bay a certain pride in being kept in order. From that he passed to keeping himself in order, and later to keeping others in order.
