LABOUR UNREST IN SHANGHAI,
AGITATORS BUSY.
TROUBLE SPREADING.
#
The labour situation in the Western mill district grew considerably more tense yesterday, resulting in a general strike being declared in two of the three remaining Nagai Wate Kaisha milla which had heretofore remained loyal, says the M.-C. Daily News of August 99th.
Only one of the 19 Naigai mills (num- ber' in the Gorden Road district) is now operating, continues the paper and only about 50 per cent of the hands at that mill returned to work when the night shift went on at 8 o'clock yesterday even- ing.
The two mills which went out yesterday were numbers 3 and 4, in the Footoo Road district. It is expected that number 8 mill will close to-day and there are lears that the. Dong Shing cotton mill, also in the Gordon Road district, will be closed. So far there has been no attempt to close the several Chinese-own- ed mills of the two district.
The Threatened Parade." Rumours, confirmed by high, police officials, were in circulation last night that the agitators were planning to stage a big demonstration to-day. From 'secret' sources, the pelice learned that the num- ber one agitators häve laid their plans to form a procession in the Gordon Road and Pootoo Road districts and, after working up the labourers, to lead the mob down Nanking Road."
The polite declare that they have a firm grip on the situation and express little doubt but that the affairs will be a com- plete failure. Extra squads of police have been put on guard to patrol the two districts and have been given instructions to break up the small crowds which con- gregate to listen to the "wisdom" of the agitators.
One agitator was arrested yesterday
afternoon in the Pootoo Road district as
he was trying to speak to a group of
labourers.
Intimidation at Work. Observations, made in the Pootoo Road district yesterday afternoon when the night shift workers were crossing the Soochow Creek from Chapel into the Set- tlément, disclosed that agitators were busily engage Chinese territory in- timidating the ll hands, Whether the Chapel authorities were not aware of this, or were turning a blind eye to the obvious, we are not in a position to say. At any rate, hundreds of handbills were fluttering about, most of which are said to have beer distinctly inflammatory,
The quiet insidious work of propaganda parties went on unabated, and picketing continued as before-that is, when the police were not looking. It was with re- lief on the part of both managements and police that ho acts of violence were reported, as was the case on Wednesda and nursday, when assaults were made ön foremen and inspectors, one of the latter class being shot to death.
Threatening Letters. Characteristic of the present crisis is the large number of threatening letters that have been sent to Chinese holding superior offices. There missives are not confined to one mill alone.
RUBBER MARKET. SINGAPORE SHARE QUOTATIONS.
Messrs. Carroll Bros. have received; telegraphs advice from Singapore that: rubber is now quoted at 69 cents per lb. and that the Kadella Rubber Co. baa declared an interim dividend of 5 per cent, making 10 per cent to date.."
