GREAT BRITAIN. AND RE-PAY- MENT OF WAR DEBTS.
THE FRENCH MUDDLE.
[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. ].
Lossos, July 31st..
The desperate financial position in which the French find themselves is being watched with sathined attention in this country. The sensational fall of the frane has caused some uneasiness, to put it mildly, and nobody here ventures to predict what will happen eventually There are doubts whether France is capable of seeing where she is going. It is an amazing thing to English people. who are accustomed to reply upon them..
tire overcoming of selves for
their troubles that the French seem so hope lessly divided on a financial policy.
To observers here most of the trouble! appears due to the refusal of the French people to recognise the necessity to tax themselves. They have hidden their heads in the sands for years. In this country we saw the need for taxation in our own case, and we have borne a heavier lond than any other nation in order to be able to carry our heads proudly, and to look, the whole world in the face. The result
is seen in the fact that British credit stands as high as it has ever stood a spite of the drain on our resources due to war debts, industrial depression, and & MACAO other troubles including a General Strike and the coal dispute which still drags on.

LACK OF GRATITUDE.
It is rather unkind of the, French to lay the blame for their financial troubles on us; for the unpalatable truth is that we stand next to America in un popularity, America is held responsible for France's predicament by her attitude over repayment of war debts, and despite the fact that we agreed to let France off the major portion of the debt owing to us, British tourists are booed in the streets of Paris.

Mr. Shaw refused to bind himself, and so his remarks were not heard on the wireless An attempt was made by Mr. Ramsay MacDonald to manufacture political capital out of this by suggesting that the Government wanted to suppress freedom of speech. But this was rather silly, for all partics are treated alike in the matter, and there is no reason why M. Shaw should be an exception to the general rule.
