11 TO HIS EFFICIENCT.

The Nieuws van den Dag, in a lengthy article, pays tribute to the basiness qualities of the late Mr. Hammond, who died on August 14th in London, as well as his loyalty to the Dutch East Indian Government.

In making a comparison of the effecient administration of the Pamanoekan and Tjiassemlanden, otherwise known as the Anglo-Dutch Plantations, the paper says a very marked improvement has been made during the last ten years, and it is through Mr. Hammond's capabilities, first as bead manager and later as: managing director, that the estates of the Anglo-Dutch Plantations had been extended, improvements

In Kent's first innings, Hubble made 73. and it was in the second knock that Woolley rattled up his 217 in two hours and a half. Ashdown with.58 and Knott with 56 were his best partners.

SENSATIONAL BOWLING.

There was a sensational ending to the match at Bristol between Leicester and Gloucester. The home country gained a lead of 23 on the first innings, but were dismissed in the second innings for 74 runs. Parker and Mills, bowling/ un- changed, brought about a startling col lapse of the Leicester side, Glancenter winning eventually by 54 runk. The

Gloucester, 306 and 74. Leicester, 271 and 53. Dipper and L. P. Hedges made 77 and 81 respectively in the Gloucester first in- nings, while the principal scorer in the Leicester first innings was C. E. Taylor with 50.

Gloucester collapsed on batting a second time, Geary and Astill proving almost unplayable. Geary took 5 wickets for 20 runs, and Astill 4 for 33.

Astill's four wickets enabled him to complete the douboe of scoring one thou sand runs and taking one hundred wickets in a single season for the six successive season.

Leicester required 110 to win, but bowling unchanged Parker and Mille went through the side even more sen- sationally than Geary and Astill had done. Leicester · were all put for 55, Parker taking four wickets for 20, and Mills taking 8 for 26.
