A short time since, when acting as the British representative in Central Asia, I was invited to a banquet with a Chinca governor who, in accordance, with cus tom, received me ou the outskirts of his capital, and conducted me, personally to the place prepared for my accommoda- tion. My host was greatly upset at this ignoble- entry, but he soon saw the humour of it and enjoyed the joke.
