There is very little to report with re gard to cholera in ports from which certain ships in Hongkong Harbour have arrived, as their stay in these ports was very brief. The China Navigation Tean cang from Haihow and Haiphong. She anchored about 6 miles out from Hoihow 'hrameng, Chinese str. 1,099 toas. for about an hour only. No passenger.

A Chinese report states that three out of twenty-one river steamers formerly on the Hongkong-West River run are now employed. These 21 ships are owned by 17 differeat Chinese companies and are. exclusive of the Hongkong-Canton boats. Hitherto steps bave been taken by some of the owners to play their craft on routes excluding Hongkong-in prefer ence to laying up-but have been deter- red. China The $.s. Ink San, a 3,000 tons vessel Isailed from Jesselton on July 10th on her frst voyage to North Borneo in direct competition with three ships that so far have had the trade to themselves. The agents of this new steamer are advertis ing her advantages her advantages and offer a fifty per cent, reduction in freights and passages to and from, Hong kong. The vessel's round trip fakes in the East Coast ports and brings" her round to Jesselton whence" she sails direct to Hongkong. It is stated that this ven- ture has been met by a corresponding lowering of freight by the steamers in Song and Man Sang. It is also said that these two steamers intend to make Jessel- on their first port of call on the voyage down from Hongkong.
