Pain.
Sir Edward joined the Board shortly after the formation of this Company, and had been its Chairman since the year 1901, therefore he has been largely re- sponsible for the growth of the Company and bringing it to the sound condition it is in to-day. Mr. AE. Faine also contributed in no small measure to the success of the Company, especially dur. ing the term, he held the position of Managing Director, and it is with regret that we were compelled to accept his re- signation on account of private affairs which necessitated his return to England. I am sure you will all join with me in wishing both these gentlemen a well de- served rest, and a happy retirement at
home.
On the retirement of Mr. Paine in March last, Mr. W. S. Watson was, ap- pointed to succeed him, and your Direc- tors have every confidence in his success- ful management of the Company's affairs, owing to his long service with the Com pany and close business association with Mr. Paine.
The year under review has not been an easy on your Directors having much that demanded their close attention and as a consequence nearly doubled their work, but with commensurate results you will no doubt agree. On account of the local general strike, our factory Chinese employees absented themselves from work for a period of close on four months, but I am pleased to state, however, that with the aid of our foreign employees we were able to maintain an output at our factory sufficient to take care of the needs of both our wholesale and retail
business.

THEIR OBJECTIONS. "Many girls, however, expected to work unreasonably short, hours, and objected to beginning as early as 9 a.m.
Good posts, with good prospects, had been frequently refused for such a trivial reason.
A frequent complaint was the weak- ness of girls in arithmetic. In one case an important Woolwich firm offered an excellent opening in special figure work, and the six girls specially selected for interviews failed in the tests. The firra was therefore compelled to give up the idea of employing girls on this work.

The damp heat of the past few days once again brings to mind the ancient question of the ideal summer dress sait, says the N. Daily New to hand. Obviously the broad-cloth of-winter is impossible.
