BORNEO MISSION ASSOCIATION. BRITAIN'S COMMERCIAL LIFE..

NEED FOR WORK, AMONG NATIVE TRIBES.

At the annual meeting of the Borneo, Mission Association, held in the Mary Summer House on June 2nd, the Chair man was Mr. Edward Hose, CM.G., late Colonial Secretary in Singapore, and son of the late Bishop of Singapore, Labuan and Sarawak.

to imagine that our domestic problems are more acute and difficult than they are, to, assume that the prospect of a real improvement in industrial relation ships in this country is very remote, and to conclude that our position as a great trading and inicial centro is in jeo pardy. Such conclusions, however, would be erroneons, for while the strike invol ved the country "in serions losses" and difficulties, the events of the past month have emphasised the fundamental solidity of the national position, not only in con stitutional, but in-various other direc tions.

Archdeacon Champion, of Sarawak, paid a tribute to the generosity of the Governments in Boraco and their help in the building and support of the Mis sion Schools. The most pressing need to-day, he asserted, was represented by the Dyak Missions. There were, but two priests ancngst the Sea Dyak tribes, one nearly 70 who could not-long-be-expected to endure the long journeys, the other young, but strained to the uttermost of his powers by the varied demands of his -work-ble. THE HONGKONG WEEKLY PRESS, PUBLISHED TO-DAY, CONTAINS A NUMBER OF MOST INTERESTING. CONTRIBUTIONS WHICH THROW LIGHT UPON THE PRESENT POLI TICAL SITUATION IN SOUTH CHINA.

Mr. Engene Chen's letter to the American Consul at Canton regarding recognition by the Powers is given, together with his protest to the Acting British Consul against the closing of Wuchow Port.

In this protest, it will be remembered, Mr. Engene Chen

asked for an apology, an indemnity and for the dis missal of the Senior Naval Officer.

the same issuel there is a full account of the trouble that has arisen in the Customs Service on account of the policy of intimidation and tyranny carried out by the Strike Pickets.

The Chinese employees, many of whom have been kidnapped and ill-treated by the Pickete, are remaining in the Custom's Building night and day be ause of fear of molestation and imprisonment if they venture into the streets.

The Commissioner of Customs himself remains with

his men.

At the same time there is a steadily growing feeling in Canton that the boyco will soon be a thing of the past

It is impossible to explain all these apparently contradic-

tory situations in a letter.
