The story of Pratas is well worth the telling, and as it cannot be too well known, a fow additions to what appear ed in these columns last week may not be out of place.

When it is understood that erary bit. of building material, even to stone and sand and water, had to be transported to the Reef and then man-handled 'out of a small vessel rolling heavily in the swell four miles from shore into small lighters..

dlso brought down to Pratas from Shanghai or Hongkong-which only care. ried from 3 to 5 tons at a time, readers way get a faint idea of a few of the difficulties encountered at the beginning. of the enterprise. Recalcitrant coolies and workmen bad also, to be dealt with on the spot, and there was much coming The decision to build on the Island was and going among those who sighed for _made_a_long_time ago and has been a cinemas, tea-houses and other luxuries subject much in the mind of the Hong.unknown on Pratas-as yet and whe kong Chamber of Commerce for years wished to return to civilisation. Full reports of discussions on this sub ject can be seen in back copies of their annual reports. The Island of Pratas is not a reef. It is in the shape of a double tooth, the portion between the two fangs forming the inner Lagoon. It is about three miles long by one mile broad. A reef extends off the S.E.W. and S.W. by a group, of distinguished visitors. If sides of the Island at a maximum dis tance of about 4 miles, and inside this reef is a lagoon of shallow water, with pinnacles and bottom of coral.

VISIT OF INSPECTION, That all the difficulties connected with the building and ficting out of this super. station have been safely and surely-sur- mounted-and single-handed be it remem bered-will be apparent to all who attend the visit of inspection shortly to be made

the Director of the Royal Hongkong Observatory is among the number, he is likely to gaze with envious eyes on the quantity, and the quality of meteoro logical instruments supplied to the THE LIGHTHOUSE. The Wireless Station was decided on as station. It is not venturing too much soon as the Const Guard Administration to say that Hongkong never has been, of China was organised in 1925. A light and probably never will be fitted out on house has also been erected but that is such a lavish scale as Pratas is, and it only an adjunct to the administration is extremely unlikely that any station in. of the Island. It is primarily intended the Far East can offer a comparison in to be of service to relief-boats and others. the matter of instruments, all of which making Pratas. Very seldom-and then are in duplicate, at least, of herometers only as an exception-would the light be there are many more than two sighted by vessels bound elsewhere. The Light itself is fitted with a Sun valve which automatically shuts off the light at daybreak and turns it on again at dusk. At this stage it is well to emphasize that the Chinese Maritime Customs have nothing whatever to do with the building or upkeep of Pratas The Coast Guard Administration of China is entirely staff- ed by Chineze.

Owing to the mishap to her turbines, however, this scheme has had to be alter Fed, for it would upset the whole schedule if she continued to Vancouver from Nagasaki Owing to the shortness of notice of her return to Hongkong, it will tiot be feasible to arrange passenger or freight bookings.
