EXPUNGE IT FROM THE COMMERCIAL DICTIONARY.
"NEW METHODS TO MEET NEW CONDITIONS.
ADVICE TO THE LONDON CHAM.
BER OF COMMERCE, "Taereis word which should be expunged from the commercial diction ary, and that word is precedent, said Sir James Martin, the Chairman, at the annual meeting of the members of the London Chamber of Commerce..
.12
The concern he continued, is doomed which says we have always manufac tured in such and such a manner, mar keted in such and such a manner, and wold on-such and such terms, and there fore we cannot do this, that or the other." Conditions have changed funds mentally during the last decade, and there are no precedenta Actions on our part which were found to produce cer tain results under pre-war conditions, will not produce the same results under post-war conditions; and the sooner we abandon the notion that the same results will follow, if we go ou performing these same actions long enough, the better it will be for this nation.
BIG. DECREASES.

Let us not confound a lavish following of precedent with the intelligent exercise of ripe experience. We were once the only workshop in the world, and all who wanted manufactured goods had to come to us for them but now ours is one Among many workshops, and the position is completely reversed; instead of buyers coming to us we must go to them. It is no longer any good expecting that the world will bay what we decide they ought to want we can no longer dictata to them. Thousands of millions of our money; representing the accumulated savings of generations, was blown into space during the late war, and it is a hard economic fact that humanity is poorer and not richer in consequence of that destruction.
