China is oxpanding on this vast contin- ental coast in two ways. The first is her immemorial method of agricultural colonies, an infiltration and penetration of families and clans into new regions, picking the eyes out of the land, and eady to go on in advance of Chinese rule, since in the village is all the rule that matters. Such is the method which is building up a aub-nation in Manchuria, not so long ago a desert. The second is a newer thing. Mahatma Gandhi, for long a thorn in the side of the British authorities in India with his theories of non-co-opera- tion, and at one time literally wor shipped by the mass of that country, is reported to have accepted an invita tion from the National Literary Research Society of China to deliver a series of lectures in Shanghai, either in the early autumn of this year, or early in 1921. Mahatma Ghandi, up till a few years ago, had a remarkable influence over the Indian people. He was imprisoned by the British for his soditious setivities, and startled the world on his release by recanting all his previous theories and ideas. He was led to this step by disgust. with his own followers, who could not grasp or put into operation his ow ideas of peaceful non-co-operation, and on countless occasiga resorted to violence and bloodshed, which Gandhi abhorred.
