THE CHARGE AGAINST A CHINESE

CHARD ENGINEER.

TURNING SWORDS INTO PLOUGHSHARES:

Lai Tak, the master of the Lin Lue enginesring shop at No. 359, Roclamation Street, Mongkok, who is being charged with possession of six dismantled cannon and spare parts was yesterday again before Mr. J. E. B. Nihill, at the Kow loon Magistraay.

The defendant continued his aridence. Replying to Mr. Somerset Fiteroy (his Counsel) defendant said that it was his intention to convert the 'amail gun; which had been brought to him: sa 4" model into a machine for extracting: pea-nut oil by water power. One of the men who ordered the machines bad taken away the original plan, and it had never been returned to witness. He denied. having told an interpreter that he had anid that the machines had been ordered by a man from Macno. He contended that what he said was, that the machine were to be used in, Macho,

A DEMONSTATION.

At this stage Mr. Fitzroy said that, he desired to demonstrate with the machine in Court, as to how the oil was extracted. The machine was fixed on two blocks of wood below the Magistrate's seat. It was connected with another water-filled box-like contrivance, fitted with a handle, by along tube. A number of biscuitá which had been made from peanuta were inserted in the "breach of the machine, and a man manipulated the handle. Pressure went up to 1,800 pounds, and the oil flowed through two mall tapa affixed underneath the machine.

After the demonstration was concluded His Worship expressed doubt as to whe ther the contrivance was commercially sound. It all depended, he said, on the question of time and labour..

Mr. Fitzroy said that there was an identical machine-in a Chinese shop ove

He had the roadway from the Court. seen the machine working and the re- sults produced were not as good as those of the machine in Court. Counsel fur ther contended that the defendant had only made the machine for someone also. He was not concerned whether it was commercially sound or not. He had merely contracted to make it.

His Worship thought that such a big machine should crush a large quantity of pea-nute in a short time.
