THE GREAT GENERAL STRIKE IN BRITAIN.

OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT'S REVIEW.

HOW THE STRUGGLE BEGAN AND ENDED.

COUNTRY SAVED AND STRIKERS DEFEATED BY VOLUNTEERS.

Losson, May 4th The English people are always at their best when they are faced with a crisis of the first magnitude. This was the case when the General Strike came upon them, wildenly, like a thief in the night, and delivered a blow at the heart. You have read in brief about the strike day by day as the cables Bashed the message describing what was happening. "but it will probably be of interest, if I set down in greater detall some salient features of the struggle as it originated and deve- bped up to the time of writing. -EXPECTATION OF COMPROMISE

The blow fell at midnight on May 3rd. Until ther-or rather, on the following morning, May 4th-there were millions who scarcely took the threat of a General Strike seriously. They said to themselves or their neighbours that the trouble

way of stating the position and getting the perspective right is to give verbatim the announcement which appeared in all the other London papers. It was in the following terms:-
