CHAIRMAN'S SPEECH.
The CHAIRMAN mid-Gentlemen,-1 vory much regret to have to lay such an unsatisfactory statenint before you, the log on working being attributable to the conditions which arose so far back as last June.
The earnings of the steamers up to the beginning of the month were fairly satisfactory, but the anti-British feeling and consequent boycott in Canton added to the general unrest in China, effectually destroyed any prospect of profitable working.
The carnings of this Company were particularly affected, as" the ports at which its steamer usually call, were practically closed for the last six months of the year and only occasional and spas modio sailings to the port of Foochow could be attempted by one or two of the steamers, the remainder being laid up during the half year..

As far as the present year is concerned the situation perhaps slightly better.
The port of Foochow has been working satisfactorily, and the Company still contrals a full share of the trade to and from that port in spite of competition. Amoy reopened in April last, for the iwments (combined)... port and export of, cargo and now is working normally. Swatow, however, remains entirely closed to all vessels sail- China Lights (combined)....$19 buy. ing from Hongkong.
The Hai Foong has been sold since the tlosing of the accounts, and we have been fortunate in obtaining charters for some of the steamers at rates which have enabled them to pay their way. All the steamers of the Company, are at pre- sent, in commission.
There has been a great deal of sickness among the officers of the feet, occasion- ing heavy expenditure for hospital and other expenses which is responsible for au increase of nearly $18,000 in charges under the heading-Leave and Pensions Account..
Regarding the amount appearing in the accounts as due from the Compradore a large proportion has since been paid and we hold ample sturity for the remain- der.
I do not think that there is anything. 'more that can be added, but it is indeed difficult to forcast the future of ship- ping, for when the unfortunate tension that at present exists between Canton and Hongkong is relaxed, though the Company retains the confidence of ship pera, it must be borne, in mind that there is a large number of steamers in this part of the World, and that com- petition at first, at any rate, may be ex pected to be very keen.
I now beg to propose that the report and accounts, a presented be adopted, and alter this has been seconded I shall be pleased to antxer any questions to the best of my ability.
Mr. Ho LEUNG seconded, and the re port and accounts were carried unani- mously.

On the proposition of Mr. CHAN WING KEU, seconded by Mr. A. H. WRITE, Messrs. Lowe, Bingham & Matthews and Mesars. Linstead & Davis were re-elected na auditors at a remuneration of $500 each.
This concluded the business of the meet- ing.
